FG PAYS PHCN WORKERS N80BN SEVERANCE BENEFITS
The federal government has said the sum of N80.290 billion had been
paid as pensions and gratuities to workers of PHCN.
Briefing State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of
stakeholders in the power sector at the Presidential Villa, the
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Godknows Igali, said
government would ensure that all PHCN workers, whose record had been
validated are duly paid their entitlements.
He further said the payment was coming ahead of the handover of the
assets of the PHCN by private investors tomorrow simultaneously across
the country.
He stressed that an additional 605 workers have also been validated on
Tuesday and their payment have just been paid.
However, NUEE said the directive became necessary following the
desperate move by the federal government to physically handover PHCN
facilities to investors without the resolution of labour issues.
The union also accused government of deploying armed military troops
to all PHCN installations stating that the aim is to ostensibly to
allow a forceful takeover of the installations without conclusively
settling the labour issues
In a statement signed by NUEE's Secretary, Joe Ajaero, claimed that
only 68 per cent of the gratuity payment had been made, noting that
"no member has received a dime of the pension funds savings into
his/her Retirement Savings Account (RSA) as agreed.

UNIVERSITIES TO OPEN NEXT WEEK, WITH OR WITHOUT ASUU - FG
President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday, November 4, meet with the
leadership of ASUU at the Presidential Villa.
An official of the Vice President's office who pleaded anonymity told
Scan News that all hands are now on deck to ensure that the
Universities resume next week.
The President will at next Monday's meeting present to the ASUU
leadership the administration's last concession for them to call off
the prolonged strike.
A source at the Presidential Villa noted that if ASUU fails to call
off, the Federal Government will then resort to plan B, which will be
to compulsorily open the Universities, using the instrumentality of
the governing councils and the school managements.
Already, most of the governing councils of the Universities have
started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening
of the Universities should ASUU fail to honour the personal request of
President Jonathan.
It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may
have necessitated this line of action to salvage the Universities
system from the direction it is facing at present.

NANS GIVES ASUU 7-DAY ULTIMATUM TO RESUME WORK
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Abia State
chapter has given ASUU a seven-day ultimatum to call off the nearly
four months old strike or face confrontation by the students.
According to NANS, education is their right and not a privilege,
adding that by the lingering strike, the lecturers have denied them
their right. Addressing journalists yesterday in Umuahia, NANS Zone B
also said that the timing of the strike by ASUU was detrimental to the
security and economic situation of the country.
The students also faulted their lecturers for producing half-baked
graduates and blamed it on the lecturers, saying that the dearth of
facilities in the nation's universities has nothing to do with.
According to the Financial Secretary of NANS Zone B, Miracle Eluwah,
lecturers should be blamed for the poor quality of graduates turned
out, because they encourage sorting and sleeping with female students
and award them unmerited marks.

The Igbo Progressive Union, IPU yesterday sound a note of warning to
President Goodluck Jonathan not to dare think of sacking Stella Oduah,
the Nigeria's Minister of Aviation as being clamoured by many
Nigerians over her scandalous purchase of two bullet proof BMW cars at
the outrageous sum of N225million, if he does, the president should

The group gave the threat at during a protest against public outcry,
calling for the sack of the embattled minister.
Nigeria, a country where we celebrate criminals. If not why would
anybody, group or individual stands and be identified with a criminal?
When shall this country be saved from the hands of tyrannies? May God
come to the rescue of Nigeria. A country where criminals are
celebrated and shielded in the name of tribal affiliate.

THE CRIES OF AN ARSENAL FAN
Arsenal fail to make the quarterfinals of the league cup for the first
time in 14 years. Goals from Azpilicueta and Mata saw Chelsea
comfortably beat the gunners in the end. A whole lot of passing and
nice moves with no final product which is the thing that counts. Some
points I took out of thee game:
Jenkinson reassured that Sagna is most definitely our best right back.
We have to prey that Giroud does not get injured. Bendtner isn't up to scratch.
Per and Koscielny are our best centre backs. Vermaelen was mediocre
and could have been sent off tonight.
Losses against Dortmund and Chelsea have damaged the run we are on.
Hopeful some better news against Liverpool on Saturday.

NIGERIA WILL WITNESS PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE ON SUNDAY
The Director General, National Space Research and Development Agency,
Dr. Seidu Mohammed, claims that on Sunday Nigerians will witness a
partial or even total solar eclipse.
Mohammed made this known at the briefing in Abuja. He urged Nigerians
not to panic over the course of the eclipse.
According to his words, the eclipse will be seen across the country
and in the West African sub-region.
"Different cultures have different reactions to them. There is no
course for alarm."- he stated.
Mohammed assures people that they don't need to worry about GSM
operation – it will continue to work. Other things, as he said, will
also be normal.
"Cities by cities will be reported in Nigeria, where the eclipse will
be; partial eclipse or total eclipse. People should continue with
their normal business. Because of partial rays, people should use
their sun glasses."
Nawa o°oO, ASUU plus eclipse equals to? *smh*
