I once said in one of my articles that win a Champions league once you have already established yourself as an elite footballer. But in a situation whereby you played for a top flight club for more than 15 years and you didn't win the league title for once, not withstanding the fact that you came so close once and if not for the famous ''Gerard slip' 'you would have been a champion is very appaling, shameful and disgraceful. This is the case of Steven George Gerrard.
Two FA cups, three league cups, one UEFA champions league, one UEFA cup and two UEFA super cups. The English player who was England's third best midfielder for many years, behind only Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard, failed to win the English premier league despite playing for Liverpool football club which is among the big four clubs in England(Man utd,Liverpool,Arsenal and Chelsea).16 summers he had waited,a patient man,and when he came close to winning it,he himself was the one who failed, following his unfortunate slip which gifted Demba Ba Chelsea's opening goal at Anfield.Rumor has it that the supposed Liverpool match fixing which they did with Chelsea when a certain Gerrard sent Chelsea on the way to the title with a horrible back pass to Reina which was intercepted and converted to a goal by Drogba on May 2 2010,came back to haunt them.
It was said that Liverpool never wanted Manchester United to win the 19th league title,as they both were tied at 18 league titles. But how many league titles have Manchester united now?Twenty at the last count, and Manchester United fans have never stopped taunting Gerrard for all his failures, the worst being that Ryan Giggs has got more medals than the whole Liverpool football club!! But his heroics in the Champions league were great,21 goals in 72 appearances and not forgetting the 'Miracle of Istanbul',which is the greatest comeback ever witnessed in modern football. After being 3-0 down at half time,Liverpool were led by Gerrard to a famous victory over AC Milan in the 2005 Champions league final.Steven Gerrard will leave knowing that that thought will always haunt him,he will leave knowing that he didn't achieve that great feat(shameful though),he will leave knowing forever in his heart that whenever fellow great Premier league legends like Scholes,Giggs and even Henry are speaking,he will keep his head down knowing that he didn't achieve that great feat they did.
But let us not forget Steven Gerrard, let us not forget the 'Miracle of Istanbul'(that night was great),Let us not forget Steven Gerrard's many years of greatness and service to Liverpool and the EPL, and may we also not forget 'Slippy G',but let us believe that the fallen hero shall rise again and we hope he will do that at LA Galaxy.
Nice article.
