THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LEGENDS(pt.6) - Chijioke Bernard Onyekwere

GERD MÜLLER- When you talk about the 'German football machine',this was one of those who pioneered it.Gerd Müller, not Thomas Muller.Yes,one day Thomas will be regarded as a legend, but Gerd had long since sealed for himself a fine little chapter in the annals of history.Born 3rd November,1945,he joined Bayern Munich in 1964,where he teamed up with fellow country man,Franz Beckenbauer and scored 398 goals in 453 appearances between 1964 and 1979.He scored a total of 487 goals in 555 appearances for the three different clubs he played for from 1963 to 1981.For his country West Germany(Germany),he scored 68 goals in 62 appearances. The one time winner of the FIFA world cup with West Germany in 1974 held the all time goal-scoring record in the world cup with 14 goals,a record that stood for 32 years until it was broken by Brazil's Ronaldo at the 2006 world cup and, later, by German compatriot Miroslav Klose at the 2014 world cup.

The three time UEFA champions league winner with Bayern Munich in 1974,1975 and 1976 held the record for most goals scored in a calendar year, striking 85 goals in 1972,until his record was surpassed on 9 december,2012 by Lionel Messi.Gerd Müller, nicknamed 'Der Bomber' had speed and agility which were always his greatest assets-and this enabled him to reach an extreme acceleration and be first to the ball.Gerd Müller was Germany's all time leading scorer with 68 goals in 62 appearances for almost 40 years until Miroslav Klose surpassed him on 6 june,2014.

His record of 66 goals in 74 appearances in European cups competition was surpassed by Raùl in the 2010 campaign. The 1970 world cup golden boot winner with 10 goals holds the single-season Bundesliga record with 40 goals in 1971-72 season. The three time winner of the champions league scored 35 goals in 35 champions league matches,a time when the competition was initially a straight knockout competition open only to the champion club of each country.A prolific striker, renowned for his clinical finishing, especially inside the penalty box,and he is regarded as one of the greatest goalscorers of all time. There was no Bayern Munich without Müller and certainly you can't talk about the champions league without talking about Gerhard Müller.Players will come and go but 'Der Bomber' came and wrote records for eternity.
