SWEARING IN CEREMONY OF NACOSS EXECUTIVES

AN INAUGURAL ADDRESS PRESENTED BY NNAKWE JIDECHUKWU D. THE NEWLY ELECTED NIGERIAN ASSOCIATION OF COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENT (NACOSS) UNZIK CHAPTER, AT THE SWEARING IN CEREMONY.

The head of department, staff adviser, teaching staffs, fellow comrades, ladies and gentlemen, I am honoured and privileged to address you today as the head of student of the department of computer science. The destinies, skills, talents and various potentials represented here are just overwhelming. I am inclined to rightly say that NACOSS is in safe hands should we retain the crop of a people gathered here today.
I am deeply indebted to the students who accorded me the opportunity to be their student leader by voting indiscriminately and consciously trusting that a new wave of leadership is sweeping through the corridors and the streets of UNIZIK. For the chance, I am grateful.
I would like to share five principles that I believe will be springboards to realizing our academic, social, religious, individual & collective goals. These values, well adhered to shall nurture us as a people to rise head and shoulder above the competition.
MOTIVATION
The culture of resignation, reservation and "snobbishness" is like a common cold in our department especially among the students. So, I would beg to ask, what is it that moves us to come to school every day? Is it our involving classes, learned tutors, the engaging sports or contemporaries? Whatever it is, the student executive is here to make your while in school worthwhile. We are the bridge that shall facilitate mutuality between the student body and the administration. The council is not a sling that shall be used to throw stones at the management. I thus call upon your talents and co-operation and urge you to maximize the resources presented to you. Let's remember that your enthusiasm is the fuel that runs the NACOSS engine. Be inspired to make and leave this wonderful institution a better place than you found it.
UNIQUENESS
We as a department are exceptional in many respects: the student dress code, the prompt commencement of classes when a semester begins, a special breed of students and the department one of a kind in the university and the Nigerian nation. I call upon us to appreciate our diversity, talents and extraordinary gifts, and step out and be counted. Let's not suffer an identity crisis but embrace our differences. If you happen to visit the zoo, you will have the opportunity to witness a herd of zebras. Zebras all look alike, but what stands out on each of them are the distinct stripes on their hides. Let's leave a mark of positive change and affirmative difference everywhere we go.
HARDWORK
My mum always tells me to work like a donkey but never to reason like one. We ought to work smart and hard in all we do. I advocate that we get involved in the various meaningful programs readily available in UNIZIK. All these fora will empower us and sharpen our soft skills, giving us a competitive edge in the job-market and in our social circles. To be the best should be our ambition but above all we ought to cultivate the virtues of sacrifice and integrity. The roots may be bitter, but the fruits are sweet.
INSPIRATION
Inspiration is the spark that ignites big dreams and ideas. Let's have fire in our bones and passion in our eyes. Don't be afraid to dream big and go the extra mile with a smile. We are all called to leadership and service, let's go out and conquer the world.
ACHIEVEMENT
A called people have strength from within, perseverance and power that are impervious to the blows from without. This means we are all anointed and gifted in our own special respects. Find out what is it that makes you different, stand out and be good at it. Let's not forget that we may fail sometimes but what makes us achievers is the willpower and the burning desire to rise up from the ashes and try again. May we settle for nothing less than excellence. By our achievements we shall be acknowledged. Let's sell the NACOSS UNIZIK brand far and wide!!
Therefore as I conclude, lets remember that “the best way to find ourselves is to loose it in the service of others”.  We shall take the above  principles to be our arsenal to achieving greatness. Good leaders know the way, show the way and go the way; we shall be with and go with you for the entire stretch. "Together as one, forever as one."

God bless NACOSS, God bless UNIZIK!!
Thank You.
