Our Forgotten Football Heroes- Onyekwere Chijioke

Over the past five or six years, football is gradually changing from what it normally was to what it is now. Many young football fans are cropping up all over the world and they seem not to notice that before the likes of Neymar Santos Jnr, Karim Benzema, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, there were legends who had started gallivanting through the corners of the pitch right before the new soccer icons.

Something pushed me to write this article. When two days ago, two footballing icons announced their retirements, I felt that these two people deserved an honorary mention to the younger footballing generation.

Juan Riquelme: If you will remember vividly well, he was one of those that made the 2008 Olympics final uncomfortable for Nigeria. Aged 18, he made his debut for Boca Juniors. Known far and wide as one of the best playmakers the game of soccer have ever produced. Racked up 17 goals for Argentina, won six major titles. He was Argentina's best player of the year for 4 times. And at the age of 36 he has decided to call it quits to the beautiful game of football.

David Trezeguet: One of the finest and greatest strikers known. Aged 18,he made his senior debut for As Monaco. Remembered greatly for his golden goal against Italy in the Euro 2000 final. Played for Juventus between 2000 and 2010 scored 135 goals in 245 appearances, and 34 goals in 71 appearances for France. And at the age of 37,he has finally decided to retire. I wrote this article for our younger footballing generation to know that there was a time when you wouldn't know who the world best player is even a night before the Balon d'or Gala, remember there was a time when these men still performed magic tricks with their feet, remember David Trezeguet and Juan Riquelme.
