SUG CONGRESS.....A WAR ARENA

The three arms of the students union government today 2nd May 2014, met at the moot court inside the faculty of law building to discuss the agenda of the union on how to move the union forward. After an opening prayer which was said by the majority leader of the students representative council, the president of the students union government stood up and addressed the representatives of the students union on the need for the meeting. He went on to call out what he took to be the agenda for the meeting which budget approval is of primary essence. The president advised that the budget drafting should be done having the interest of the students at heart. after that he called out for the opinions of the congress regarding budget drafting and other issues that were raised which will benefit the students. After the opening statement from the president, the chief Justice of the students union government, His lordship Ifesi Mouneme stood up and posited that the judges shouldn't have been called or invited for the meeting, their reason for this being that their activities are restricted to the interpretation of the law and not for a meeting that its purpose is to discuss the budget of the executive arm. He went on to educate the congressmen and women on the duties of the Judges and held that they can only honor a meeting that is called by the union because that is what the constitution stipulates. Immediately after he rounded up the honorable speaker of the students representative council Rt. Hon. Okigbo supported the stand of the chief justice and positioned that the executives which is one of the arms of the union cannot call for a meeting of all the arms being that it is unconstitutional. The atmosphere became so hot and unruly that everybody was calling for an adjournment of the meeting; no body wants to hear from anybody again and the place became a war zone where words are used carelessly against one another. The president after seeing how unruly the place has become, called for an adjournment but was not paid heed to. Later in the meeting, both the speaker and the chief justice stood up and denied not to have been pre-informed of the agenda for the meeting which they believed that it negates the accusation of the president that they are aware of the agenda for the meeting. It took the genuity of some honorable members to restore peace and tranquility in the venue and they pleaded on behalf of the president for the congress to adopt the listed out agenda by the president. As the meeting drew closer to the end, the more interesting and calmer the place became. When the atmosphere returned to its original calm state, the chairman house committee on security Hon. teddy Odibo stood up and pointed out the areas he thinks should be looked into and address urgently in order to serve the students better. Some of the areas he pointed out are: That the constitution should be revisited and reviewed to afford the 72 representratives of the union the right to be paid Transportation problems should urgently be addressed, the buses that need replacement should be replaced etc Security harassment and molestation of our students should be tackled Information dissemination should be of a major priority of the union. After an extensive arguments from Hon Teddy and others, Hon Chima, representing the people of Music department suggested that problems emanatimg from accomodations be addressed immediately. He also advised that a way of solving the problems be deviced but the reforms should start from the school hostels which to him the amount the students pay for accomodation is outrageous and uncalled for. After the deliberations, tuesday 6th May was adopted as the day for the second meeting to tackle all the problems raised in the congress.
