fewer than 200 babies across the state, the wife of the governor, Mrs.
Margret Obi, said.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the governor's wife
made the disclosure while presenting gift items and undisclosed amount
of cash to 15 of the babies in Awka.
The presentation of gifts was done across the three senatorial zones
of the state.
Obi, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social
Development, Dr. Henrietta Agbata, said no fewer than 200 women were
delivered of babies on January 1 in the state.
She then urged the mothers to exclusively breastfeed the babies for at
least six months.
The state's first baby of the year was a female, named Chinemerem Ezinwanne.
She was delivered at the Primary Health Centre, Awka, at exactly 12
midnight and weighed 3.2kg.
Her parents, Mr Oliver and Mrs Ebele Ezinwanne from Okpo village,
Ekwulobia, expressed happiness over the cash and gifts from the
governor's wife.
Other babies who received gifts from the governor's wife include
Chinualumogu Chukwu, a male baby delivered at the Holy Rosary
Specialist Hospital and Maternity, Waterside, Onitsha at 1.58 a.m.,
weighed 3.5kg.
Another New Year baby, Favour Ezeani, a female, weighed 3.7kg and was
delivered at 2.05 a.m. at Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital.
The parents of Chinualumogu, from Nibo in Awka South and Abagana in
Njikoka Local Council areas respectively, thanked the governor's wife
for the gesture.
Some of the items donated to the babies included diapers, toiletries,
beverages, cartons of milk, clothes, sanitary pads and blankets.
