positions declared in the January 11 local government elections held
in Anambra State on Saturday.
The winners of the elections were declared by the Acting Chairman of
the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Chief Sylvester
Okonkwo, on Sunday.
He however said the election could not hold at Nnewi North Local
Government Area. He said the election for Nnewi North has been fixed
for Saturday, January 18, 2014.
Apart from winning all the chairmanship positions, APGA also won 304
of the 327 councillorship seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party
won 12 seats. The Progressive Peoples Alliance and the United
Progressives Party won one seat each.
The event was however boycotted by all the political parties except
APGA, which is the ruling party in the state.
Okonkwo acknowledged that all the political parties except APGA wrote
to withdraw from election.
The ANSIEC chairman expressed relief that after 15 years Anambra State
has been able to hold local government elections and praised the
people of the state for conducting themselves peaceful during the
election.
But before the election was declared some overzealous policemen and
state security officials attached to the electoral commission led by
one ASP Ayuba assaulted journalists that were trying to gain entrance
into the commission's office.
