FRANKLIN ONWUBIKO - The name Nelson Mandela is such that cannot be forgotten in decades to come. Generations would live and not get weary of telling the tales of this great man from South Africa. Don't be...
surprised that It would be difficult for a patient of amnesia to
forget this name. A man who stood for what he believed in even at the
expense of his life even. A man who refused to be intoxicated by power
not because he was allergic to second or term agenda. A man who chose
simplicity than flamboyance not because he loves "OK" and hates
"Agbada". An epitome of humility which a true leader possesses. A man
who did not create anti- graft agencies to hunt his oppressors rather,
chose to liberate them for their mental slavery. Many have taken turns
to eulogise this great icon of our time. He could be said to be a man
with many lives. He was and is such a hero that nations of the world
took time to pay their last respect to a man who fought and won the
battle of apartheid in his country. A man who helped in according
blacks a pride of place in the comity of nations. No wonder the world
literally converged in South Africa to pay their last respect. Little
wonder did the US president Barack Obama describe Mandela as the last
great liberator of the 21st century comparing him to Mahatma Gandhi,
Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln urging the world to act on
Mandela's legacy by fighting inequality, poverty and racism.
The UNIZIK community is not left out in paying glowing tributes and
showering encomiums on the late icon .
The vice chancellor of the institution, Prof. Boniface Egboka stated
that the late Mandela epitomizes the basic African nature. " The late
Mandela is a perfect model of a true African. Every African is unique
and It is that unique nature as an African that propelled him in
fighting apartheid and as well gaining freedom for his people. When
people like Mandela show up, we Africans get to understand our
worth,he said.
The founder of Otu Suwakwa Igbo and a former vice chancellor of the
school had this to say about the late Mandela. " Nelson Mandela is the
greatest African to have troded this earth. No African has ever
achieved such a fame as Mandela. He has set a standard difficult to
attain ,look at him tearing down apartheid. One of his greatest
achievement was his refusal in becoming a sit-tight president. It is
indeed a great loss."
The director UNIZIK 94.1fm, Prof. Kate Omenugha described the late
Mandela as a foremost African and international leader. " I am happy
Mandela lived a fulfilled life. He is a model, an epitome of
selflessness, integrity and doggedness. He had an unflinching love for
his people, he fought apartheid ensuring that the majority white rule
in South Africa was stopped", she said.
For the Public Relations Officer of the security department, Mr.
Pascal Anyaegbunam, Mandela is a foremost icon. Hear him, " Madiba
believed in the principle of democracy, equity, justice and human
right and was ready to die for these ideals he believed in."
Udeh Chiagozie a radio presenter has this to say about Mandela, "
Africa has lost her greatest son. Mandela was the
embodiment of everything African. His death made me
wonder: who's the greatest human that ever lived?
Legends are known by their stories and his, was certainly one
of the greatest ever. He's every inch a world legend. Africa
has lost a son that comes just once in a lifetime.
I say adieu to my Global Madiba".
Elochukwu Ezeumeanya also a presenter at UNIZIK fm said this about
Mandela, " Nelson mandela is really an uncommon man. I just keep
wondering what it looks like being behind bars for 27 yrs for other
citizens.Madiba is really another Jesus on earth.
Africa has indeed lost almost all because i dont knw if there will
be anybody like him again and I dont think our present leaders are ready
to emulate him."
CenthPaul Okeke , one of the course reps in the department of mass
communication describes Mandela as a father,a mentor, a true leader
and an advocate of Justice and equity adding that he has always
admired mandela right from childhood.
"Mandela was about the greatest president that ever lived, his effort
in the fight against apartheid gave freedom to many Africans in the
western world,he was a man who believed that courage is not the
ability to fight fear alone but to overcome it." These were the words
of Chiamaka Onyeukwu, a 200L student from the department of mass
communication.
Martin Beck Nworah,a law student and prolific writer has this to say ,
" Madiba is one of a kind. A man who single handedly, changed
the cause of history and brought the whole world to Africa. He
is an icon who will never be forgotten. And let it be known to
generations yet unborn, that a god once lived amongst
men; and his name is Nelson Mandela."
Most zikites have taken to the social media eulogizing this great man,
pouring encomiums on him. As he journeys to the great beyond, we pray
His Soul Rests in Peace.
