WELCOME TO UNIZIK: THE ACADEMIC BATTLE FIELD- By Austine Chimezie Okeke

It has always been a thing of joy to see one's objective of becoming a
graduate at the edge of coming to fullfilment by gaining admission
into one of the most prestigious universities in our dear country
Nigeria. After the stress and storm of writing post utme in unizik,
and ofcourse the usual anxious wait for the release of the merit
admission list, it came to pass.

Expectedly, the first/merit admission list has been welcomed with
mixed feelings. Many are smiling, while others are already sweating
profusely as they await the release of more admission lists, which
would inturn determine their fate in the 2015/2016 academic year.
Unfortunately, UNIZIK has put a dash to such hopes by announcing that
there would be no official 2nd list and all that. But then, I know
aspirants stlill believe in miracles. The release of the merit
admission list will continue to highlight this famous biblical
parlance, ''many were called, but few were chosen''. I am very sure
that at the moment, the heart beats of aspirants yet to see their
names in the admission list are racing even faster than Usain Bolt.

Sometimes while ruminating over the inevitable mounting to be
surmounted before GENUINELY gaining admission into a reputable
university like UNIZIK, I end up fantasizing about giving a
presidential hand-shake to such privileged students, even when I'm yet
to become a president. To those who would eventually fail to make the
cut into this highly coveted university this year, I enjoin you to go
back to your drawing boards and make better preparations so as to join
the boat come next academic year.

To the latest Zikites, welcome once again to the university of the
moment. Remember that it is not yet uhuru. The academic battle line
has just been drawn. As an advice, endeavour to make your payments as
soon as you receive the money meant for them. This would probably help
you to avert the tradition of telling sweet lies to your
parents/guardians in order to recover part of the money meant for your
payment, which you might be tempted to meddle with if you do not make
prompt payments. This is laughable but so true.

Finally, for the very first time, some people will be set free from
the ever-dominant cages of their parents/guardians. The university
community is a free world to a great extent, but rember-''man is free,
but everywhere in chains''. You will definitely come in contact with
fellow students of various categories and family backgrounds. You will
as well have ample time at your disposal. Freedon at its peak! The
onus is now on you to manage this freedom with prudence, as it will at
the long run make or mar your goals in this academic battle field.

Unsheet your swords, for the battle has just begun!
