The Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, Reno Omokri, has challenged the Director of Media and Publicity of APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mallam Garba Shehu to tell Nigerians who is afraid to debate between President Jonathan of the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) and his main challenger, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the APC (All Progressives Congress).
Omokri was responding to an earlier article by Shehu titled debating Reno Omokri and Reuben Abati, who reiterated that his principal, Buhari will not debate Jonathan ahead of the March 28 Presidential election in the country.
@abati1990 Garba Shehu answers many unasked questions while cleverly avoiding the only question asked #WhoisAfraidtoDebate?” Omokri posted in a reply to Vanguard’s tweet on the Shehu’s article.
It will be recalled that Omokri on Sunday argued that debates expose the intellectual capacity of a candidate, adding that President Jonathan is physically and mentally ready to debate. In what many see as a reference to the rejection of Buhari to debate, he added the hashtag #Whoisafraidtodebate?
While the Spokesperson of the president, Reuben Abati in an article noted that Buhari’s handlers rejected to debate on the excuse that their principal (Buhari) does not work on Sundays and a Monday will not be convenient before finally pulling out, alleging that organisers of the debate were compromised by the Jonathan government.
“His deliberate avoidance of a Presidential debate is akin to an act of examination malpractice. It is not good enough for a man who wants to be President of our country. He is short-changing the Nigerian electorate by denying them the opportunity of assessing him properly in an open debate. While a Presidential debate is not a constitutional requirement, it is an established convention that deepens and enriches the democratic process,” Abati pointed out in the article.
