In the 1930,
American poet, Langton Hughes , asked: what happens to a dream depressed? His
question flowed from his experiences as an African American living at a time
when a racist system in the USA stood in the way of many in his community.
Dreams are important motivators and failure to achieve ones dreams makes a person feel De-motivated,
unfulfilled. In fact , only a thin line separates our(giants) dream life and
living in a nightmare.
Nigeria illustrates
this clearly: the killings by the boko haram sect, the killings of one
sect(Ibos by the Hausas), the killings
of people by the government for not making provisions for them, for instance,
the rate of unemployment depicted on Saturday during the employment screening
conducted by the immigration that resulted to taking of lives of the
applicants. Let me ask this question that has continued to disturb me.
ZIKITES!!!!!! Where are we headed to? NIGERIANS!!! Are we on the right path?
Sometime 11 years ago, a governor that I respect so much said that the tree we
plant today will provide shelter for our children tomorrow, but, when is the
future when we have waited for years and yet, after waiting for so many years,
nothing was done apart from giving us the same unreliable hope in the
empty future? My grandfather in his blessed memory, spoke
poignantly about the dreams he nurtured
during his early years as a bachelor which he never achieved. Those advanced in
age today will also tell you the dreams they nurtured when the country became
independent in October 1960 but up till
now, nothing is achieved yet.
What do you think
would be the answers of Nigerians if they were put in the position to answer
HUGHES question, what happens to a dream deferred? They would probably say that
once the people lost their belief in a dream of a great nation, most would enter ship, seeking other land in which
to invest their skills and talents. Many that stayed became focused, not on how
they could help build a great nation, but how they could take care of
themselves. I ASK AGAIN WHERE ARE WE
HEADED TO, ZIKITES?
Nigeria is in the
middle of decay: the university's, for instance, accommodation due and other
dues are not contestable and we are left with nothing except to do what they
want, as a goat been dragged to the market.
ZIKITES GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED TO PROVIDE FOR US………………… LET US BUILD OUR
NATION AS A PEOPLE AND NOT EXPECTING THE FEW PEOPLE WE ELECT INTO POSITIONS TO
DETERMINE FOR US HOW THEY COUNTRY IS TO BE GOVERNED. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
RELEASED BILLIONS TO THE UNIVERSITIES BUT
NO EFFECT OF THE MONEY HAS BEEN HEARD OF OR SEEN. Dear zikites….. I
believe that the time for change is now
and it is in our hands to build that great nation we dream about which our
fathers were not able to see by mere waiting and looking.
