Despite the Academic Staff Union of Universities calling off its 169
day old strike, many students are not eager to return back to campus until the Christmas and New Year holidays are past.
USN first reported the calling off of the strike on Monday, although
ASUU hesitated to make the information public until Tuesday, even
fighting some journalists in...
the process.
ASUU President has tendered an unreserved apology for the way ASUU
members rough handled journalists carrying out their fiduciary duty to
the public.
A UNIZIK student tweeted on social media, "I hope they did not pay
those lazy lecturers back salaries. Anyway I'm not going to school
until next year."
These sentiments were echoed widely as many students feel they should
also take their time to return to school, especially since the
Yuletide period is in full effect and some of them are travelling to
their respective home towns to celebrate with members of their
extended family as is custom with many Nigerian families.
On the issue of lecturers earning back salaries, the Federal
Government is said to have bowed to the demands of ASUU, and will pay
the lecturers for the 169 day lecture free holiday they embarked upon.
ASUU and the FG chose not to make this contentious issue public due to
the outcry against ASUU receiving salaries for work not done.
Many students who feel victimized by the whole industrial action as a
result of lost time, lost money and other lost resources will not be
compensated by either ASUU or the Federal Government.
