These 17 years olds' brought us joy yesterday and we are all
jubilating and thanking God for the success at the junior world cup.
But after this success, the question that readily comes to everyone's
mind is;why can't the boys be successful as well at the adult
stage?(World Cup) This is where I tell you the...
reasons and pray our
nation gets better.
At 17,the expectations from friends, families and the nation is low;at
least not compared to the adults. After this stage, their relatives and
everyone expects them to sign for a foreign club and start bringing
home the millions. At this stage, instead of signing for a club that
will nurture and develop his talent,he'll sign for a big club that can
pay him the money and give him less playing opportunity. The relatives
will start disturbing him for schools fees, the parents will start
falling sick every now and then, the brother in Nigeria will tell him
to start sending money for the construction of a new family house in
the village and city(the brother might even use the money to feed his
girlfriends). Pressure also mounts on him from his agent and
manager,he has his personal bills to take care of and will also get in
form to play for his club. And now,the nation invites him for a
national tournament. He is already aware you hoard players bonuses and
don't take care of your injured players;what do you expect the young
man to do? Come home and stake his head for you? Certainly not,he will
take caution while playing for you so that he'll be fit for his pay
masters;his club.
Our problem in Nigeria is that we don't appreciate and nurture our
talented ones. The system kills these young spirits and puts excessive
pressure on them even before they mature. This is a sharp contrast to
what we see in the other countries of the world. Nigeria has the
potentials of becoming a world power both in sports and the economy.
Part of the problems we're facing is that of misplaced priorities and
until we get it right;we may not succeed. To these young men who did
us proud, may God save your future and help you succeed. Till we get to
the Promised Land,I will be waiting for when you'll pass me a glass of
water and thank God for the gift of grace for the race.
