governor of Anambra state. He is a one time Head of the Department of
Economics. He goes by the name Dr. Nkem Okeke. He was recently chosen
to fly the APGA ticket as the deputy with Chief Willie Obiano in
November 16 gubernatorial elections in the state. It could be recalled
that Dr. Nkem was a former commissioner for Economic planning in
governor Obi's first term.
It's quite pertinent to note that in the fold of the Victor
Umeh-faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), the
selection of the governorship running mate was with due respect to the
"shot gun marriage" between the Governor Peter Obi and Umeh.
The UNIZIKSUGNEWS gathered that as a result of the perceived
reconciliation between the
protagonists in the APGA crisis, Obi was to
nominate the governorship candidate, while
Umeh settles for the deputy. Subsequently, with
the emergence of Willie Maduabuchi Obiano,
the attempt by Umeh to field the member
representing Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia
federal constituency in the House of
Representatives, Iyom Uche Ekwunife, could not
fly. It would be recalled that while the supremacy
between Obi and Umeh lasted, Ekwunife had
refused to take sides, but maintained her support for Umeh as national chairman.
However, attempt by Umeh to reward the Rep's loyalty was defeated on
the altar of sameness of religious denomination. Obiano, being a
Catholic, Obi's loyalists found it easy to ask Umeh for another
nominee. "It was for this reason that Umeh placed phone calls to the
former commissioner for Economic Planning in Obi's first term, Dr.
Nkem Okeke, who was vacation in the United States," a source
disclosed. Okeke, who flew back to Nigeria three days ago, told
friends that he was in US when they invited him to come and pair
Willie Obiano, stressing that, "I have never met the Obiano guy in my
life." He was said to have admitted that he was Umeh's candidate.
