A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MOST SEXYLESS BUT ROMANTIC SUG EVER BY CHUKWUEMERIE UDUCHUKWU

In the past four years, the Students' Union Government of great Nnamdi
Azikiwe University, Awka have witnessed four leaderships headed by
Comrade Omenugha Mayor Nelson, Comrade Umejiburu Onyinye Bishop,
Comrade Onuegbu Victor and Comrade Hilary Ugwu respectively.
All these administrations are all remembered for one thing or the
other. Comrade Omenugha's led government was highly known for
intolerance of insult on students and he was usually accused of
slaping people older than his father that insulted him or the
students.
Apart from the behaviour mentioned above, Comrade Omenugha tried in
ensuring stability in transport fares within the campus. Though in his
recent reaction on UNIZIK SUG website, Comrade Omenugha claimed to
achieve a lot in tree planting and creation of minor roads as well as
protecting students' rights especially students involved in police
cases but those achievements seems not to be well documented for
future reference.
After the expiration of Omenugha's tenure, Comrade Umejiburu Onyinye
a.k.a Bishop emerged as the new SUG President. The most notable
feature of Umejiburu's government was his popular expensive
Presidential campaigns during which heaven and earth were promised.
Some of them include decrease in transport fares and provision of more
buses. However, the most annoying claim though not officially
confirmed by 'Bishop' was that his government rehabilitated the Ifite
road. The truth is that the SUG does not have the constitutional right
to contruct any road and the Ifite road was awarded and patched (never
rehabilitated) by Anambra State Government.
At the end of Umejiburu's led government, a gentle-looking comrade
that choosed to address himself as 'The Boy is good' emerged as the
SUG President. I have been observing his government to see the
goodness in it but it was difficult to identify one though his
government was reported to be responsible for the completion of the
'Giant House' (a completed building that looked abandoned throughout
his tenure as the SUG President). One notable
feature of his
government was 'Driving the new air-conditioned SUG bus in Awka and
its environs.' We are expecting Comrade Onuegbu to react to this
because I still don't want to believe that his government achieved
little or nothing. I still believe that 'The boy is good'
The end of Comrade Onuegbu's tenure gave birth to the most sexyless
but romantic SUG government in the history of UNIZIK. Led by His
Excellency, Comrade Hillary Ugwu, the administration is characterised
by early controversies ranging from alleged misappropriation of its
take-off grants to alleged impersonation of the SUG Vice-President by
former UNIZIK Beauty Queen. Apart from these, the administration seems
not to be united, that some people started asking if there is any
personal misunderstanding between the President and his Vice.
Another key feature of the Comrade Ugwu's led government is massive
increase in transport fares and perhaps the inabilty of his government
to call the bus drivers to other. Also out of other executive members
of his government, only the President, Vice-President and the PRO
Comrade Ezenwa Obiora seems to be active as other executive members
are seldom heard about.
Somethings I observed as major problems of this Comrade Ugwu's led
government are lack of internal democracy in the executive and lack of
unity among them. If these are resolved the union can perform better.
The disunity among the current SUG executive members is certainly
hindering its progress as a government and is also causing the
students to start loosing confidence in the present government to the
extent that most of them now see all actions of the government as
deceit and bad. The reactions of students to the just concluded SUG
week showed that they are no longer comfortable with the government
and this made them to find it unnecessary to appreciate the few good
efforts of the Union during the SUG week celebration.
Finally the SUG should be given some constitutional responsibilities
to be incharge of the construction and maintainance of some physical
projects. This will certainly make the union more vibrant and will
certainly no longer be seen as only a DOT chief conductor.
