THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - Chijioke Bernard Onyekwere

From Real Madrid's five years domination, to the historic Hampden final, to Manchester United dispatching Benfica 4-1 in 1968 final, from Capello's Ac Milan dispatching Barcelona 4-0 in 1994 to Manchester united's five minutes come back against Bayern in 1999, from Zidane firing Madrid to Glory in 2002 to "The Miracle Of Istanbul", from Bayern's Wembley truimph to Madrid's "la Decima", The UEFA Champions league is a tournament every club will love to participate in. And the trophy? A masterpiece everybody in football is keen to get their hands on.

Although it was launched soon after UEFA's first congress, held in Vienna on 2 march 1955, the European champion club's cup (as it was formally called), was not a UEFA intiative. The tournament initiated by L'Equipe (the famous french sports daily), did not stipulate UEFA contacted FIFA, and FIFA authorised the new club competition under the condition that it was organised by UEFA and that the national associations concerned gave their consent to their clubs taking part.
Real Madrid Cf immediately made the tournament their own by winning the first five finals. Since then, other clubs have also enjoyed fruitful runs in the competition with Ajax Armsterdam and FC Bayern München both completing three consecutive victories. Since its renaming in 1992 from the European Clubs Cup to the UEFA Champions league, Real Madrid, Ac Milan and Barcelona have been the most successful sides, with the spanish pair lifting the trophy four times apiece and the Rossoneri three. Madrid are the most successful club overall with ten truimphs, followed by Ac milan with seven, five for Barcelona, Bayern and Liverpool, then four for Ajax and three for Manchester United.

The competition attracts an extensive television audience, not just in Europe, but throughout the world. The final of the tournament has been, in recent years, the most-watched annual sporting event in the world. The 2013 final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern München was the most watched final to date, drawing 360 million television viewers including you reading this. The UEFA Champions League has produced many legends which you will find in the UEFA Champions League Legends, but never will another club tournament be as popular as it.
But in your own opinion, do you think the FIFA World Cup is more prestigious than the UEFA Champions League?
