Visitors to the Kelly Tarlton’s SEA LIFE Aquarium in Auckland, New Zealand, can now get photographs taken of themselves by…an octopus?
Are you ready to meet the world’s first octographer?
Yes, an octographer. It’s an octopus named Rambo; a rather talented octopus that proves the sea creature’s intellect. From inside its tank, Rambo can take photographs with a specially designed camera by using one of its tentacles to press the shutter.
“When we first tried to get her to take a photo, it only took three attempts for her to understand the process,” trainer Mark Vette told Cult of Mac. “That’s faster than a dog. Actually it’s faster than a human in some instances.”
Kelly Tarlton’s SEA LIFE Aquarium teamed with Sony for the project called “The Octographer” and pulled it off after much trial and error.
According to the behind-the-scenes video, Vette and his team took 35 days and six different camera rigs before they found a suitable camera case and red plunger that Rambo could press without any problems.
Now the octopus is an active photographer at the aquarium.
The cost is $2 per photo with proceeds going to conservation programs.
