The Students Judicial Council opened the legal year of the Students Union Government today and we were served with lots of drama. Your darling USN was there and covered the event. Among the many prayers brought before the honorable court of Justice George C. Ohachosim (C.J S.U.G), the Attorney General prayed the court to dissolve the 22nd house of the students Representative council.
According to the A.G of the S.U.G, she opined that the constitution states clearly that the tenure of the SRC is for one academic year of which a new election would be conducted for a new house to take over. The elections have been conducted and new members of the 2014/2015 Academic session representing the 23rd house have been approved by the institution. But the present SRC members are yet to vacate office. The Chief Judge granted the motion and gave an order of mandamus that the 22nd house vacates office and give room for the 23rd house to take over their legislative functions .
In another prayer which caused much laughter and confusion, the A.G prayed the court to grant an injunction to bring down the price of food from #200 to #150 and also to direct the students legal aid counsel to commence operations. The C.J allowed the "friends of the court" to make comments on the prayers. They heavily scrutinized the prayers of the A.G and her team; and just when she was about clearing the air, the C.J ordered her to sit down. This happened repeatedly and for a minute, we felt the real impact of the law.
The Chief Judge then went on to grant the prayer of instructing the students legal aid counsel to commence operations provided the funds to run the directorate is available. On the food matter, he instructed the Executives to dialogue with the food vendors. In his words, it is not within the jurisdiction of the court to grant such prayer.
Sir. Ejike Ezenwa presented a paper on Change and students behavior. It was really an educative and interesting paper.
Now after the whole show, USN captured the A.G in fierce verbal war with the friends of the court who, rather than comment as the C.J instructed, went on to criticize them. Many opinions racked into the argument and before the head of our reporter was broken, she managed to escape unhurt from the heated scene.
The full details and the final judgment of the Chief Judge will be published in our later updates.
