Stoke City striker Peter Osaze Odemwingie has revealed he and his teammates are under immense
pressure to succeed at the 2014 FIFA World Cup,
which kicked off on June 12 in Brazil. Osaze, who despite the recent controversies surrounding his relationships with the Super
Eagles coach Stephen Keshi, was included in the final 23-man squad, confessed that he was made
feel even more responsible, because he was joining a winning team (after the Eagles victory at 2013 African Cup of Nations).
He was quoted saying by Vanguard when the player’s fans from Brazil besieged him to receive autographs:
“You know that everybody expect me to do well since I am joining a winning team. Bros, I must confess that the pressure is much on
me.”
Osaze however expressed his affection towards the Nigerian team, the members of which warmly
accepted him back after his recall by Keshi:
“I’m moved by their love and that also adds more responsibility on me. The bonding has been great and there is this hunger in the team to do well that ignites more passion in
me to do well. It is a great team and once we get the first match out of the way, I believe that we will do well.”
Nigeria is to play its opening game against Iran tomorrow, June 16. Many believe that this match
will be crucial in determining the team’s future in the tournament.
