EXAMS AND YOUR HEALTH.........ANNA ABEL

"I need to cram the whole of this handout before tomorrow","I must pass this course by all means", "T.D.B (till day break) things on point"....etc. These statements are not strange to us, Zikites. We are in that crucial period that determines, to an extent, a part of our future.
Many of us take our exams too serious at the expense of our health. We forget that our health comes first. What happens if after reading for your exams, you end up not writing them because you fell sick? You will end up wasting your time and energy, bringing sickness upon yourself and worst still, having to write the exams at a future date which may not be convenient for you. To avoid this problem and to be healthy during exams, here are some health tips to help you.
1). Eat good food-: there is a saying that you are what you eat. Exams period is actually the best time to watch what you eat and also to eat healthy. While reading, your brain uses a lot of energy. If your brain doesn't get enough energy from your diet, it will take what it needs elsewhere in the body, which can make it more difficult to concentrate. Good food doesn't necessarily mean expensive food. Even as a student, you can eat good food by balancing your meal. Don't just eat noodles alone, add eggs to it. Make sure your meal contains a proportion of the six classes of food.
Also, take a lot of fruits in this period. Fruits are very much available everywhere. You can find them at Ifite school gate, around the school hostels and even at tempsite. They are very affordable.
Eat enough fish and vegetables. Fish contains omega 3 acids which help the brain to function. Avoid too much snacks, energy drinks, coffee and soft drinks, as they can affect your ability to focus. This is not the time to wash your pots and hang them. Even if you don't have the time to cook, you can still eat good food in canteens and restaurants around. More importantly, take a lot of water. Don't wait untill you get thirsty before you drink water. Keep a bottle of water next to you everytime you are studying. Always stay hydrated.

2) Relieve stress-: you don't have to read 24hrs a day before you pass your exams. Take a break. After reading for many hours, take a walk or surf the internet or play video games etc. Free your mind and help relieve stress. If you are more relaxed, you will be able to concentrate better and for a long period of time.

3) Get enough sleep-: sleep allows your brain to go over and retain everything you have learnt that day. When you don't get enough sleep, you over stress your brain. If you don't allow your body to rest, your body will make you rest by force.

Remember that exams are just for a short period of time while your health is for as long as you live. Only the living and healthy people can write and pass exams. So, my fellow Zikites, in as much as you are preparing for exams, don't neglect your health. Take good care of yourself in order not to breakdown in this period.
Wishin you great success ahead!!!...
