YOUR TIMELINE MATTERS BY MARTIN BECK NWORAH

I visited an elderly friend of mine who happens to be the CEO of a top
HR and Recruiting company in Nigeria at his home two weeks ago;the
story of my sunday journey will interest you and mostly especially job
seekers. We were having lunch at his dinning while one of his workers
was viewing many twitter handles, going through facebook timelines and
checking linkedIn accounts of some individuals. Out of curiosity, I
asked my mentor what the guy was doing and he said,"We're recruiting
about 50 new employees for one of our client companies. We were
running short of time so I invited him to speed up the process." Still
not satisfied,I insisted he told me the reason why they viewed the
facebook timeline and updates of these individuals and what do they
actually want from it. He dropped his fork and knife, cleared his
throat and replied,"Now Beck,we received about 500 applications for
just 50 positions. 200 of them met all the academic and overall
requirements for the job but the company insisted on employing 50
candidates. So we decided to check on their social life, perhaps that
can give some of them away. You know our people's gullibility, they
easily rush to facebook and twitter to say almost anything. Maybe, just
maybe,we will find someone who has insulted the company or one of its
brands in a way".
I was not really happy because it seemed to me a harsh process of
elimination. "Sir,Cindy, the tall fair girl posted about hanging out at
the nightclub and posted some unclad pictures too" said the young man
at the computer desk. His boss replied,"delete her name immediately,I
thought she was well mannered. Even if you go to club, must you show
your boobs to the world, yet you want a corporate position". I watched
as the names were reduced from 200 to just a little above 80 because
of the social media, words, comments and pictures these individuals
posted online. My HR friend said that one girl was the balanced church
type, updating about birthdays and God;she can handle tough situations
very well. I decided to tell this tale because many of us feel what we
update on our social media handles doesn't matter. I'm not saying you
shouldn't exercise your freedom of speech, but when you know the
consequences of your "IDC"(I don't care) attitude;you will think twice
about telling us how many ladies you got laid this weekend or who just
broke up with you.(Your employers may feel you're emotionally
unbalanced for the job)
Finally, social media is a place to be real and be who you are. If
updating soccer scores is what you do best, look for soccer jobs or
make sure your handle won't be used in accessing you. Little things of
this nature matters a lot especially in the competitive labour market
of Nigeria, where we have more people and less jobs. Hoping that you'll
take my advice in good faith,I pray you will get to the Promised
Land, there you will pass me a glass of water and thank God for the
gift of grace for the race.

  1. This is so true, many people use vulgar words, wear obscene clothes and mostly can't type well and if u happen to be friends with them on facebook or follow them on twitter, you will find out that some of these people actually passed through Primary/Secondary, then Tertiary institutions and some even up to their Masters. Then I ask myself, what is wrong with our country's Education sector? I always tell people to be careful about what they put on the social media cos you never know who may be going through your profile.

  2. Be careful with these things:You can be know by ur verbal and nonverbal actions, dressing, what you store in your phone, the friends you keep, the kind of books you read, etc

  4. I feel so honored to be the first to comment. All
of my hardwork and dedication has paid off.
Getting the top comment has been a dream of
mine for many years, and i would like to thank
those who have helped me along the way. First
and foremost i would like to thank god for
giving me this opportunity. Next i would like to
thank my parents. I want to thank my cat Belle,
for being really fat and always there for me. I
would also like to thank my pet tadpole for
surviving against all odds for over a week. Next
i would like to thank the squirrel that lives in my
backyard for climbing trees because that gives
me inspiration that i need to get through the day.
This is a special moment in my life and i would
like to thank any of my unmentioned friends
and family that have helped me along the way.
This moment will be a moment that i will never
forget. I just remmembered a few other people i
would like to thank; facebook, the fish i caught
in the third grade, my light in my room bc i
wouldn’t be able to see the keyboard without it,
the internet for letting me go on facebook, my
house because without it i would be homeless,
and last but not least i would like to thank all the
people out there that actually took time out of
their day to read this. I cannot stress how much
of a big deal to me this is. I have been trying to
be the first comment on a post for years, but that
has not been possible until this amazing day.
Hopefully my good luck will continue, but this
is undoubtedly a rare occasion. If you asked me
how i did this, i would say, you can achieve
anything u set your mind on. To all the kids out
there reading this, i would like to tell them to
follow their dreams. Being the top comment is
    amazing, thank you everyone.
