I DOUBT IF... BY MARTIN BECK NWORAH

I seriously doubt if ASUU will call off this strike any time soon. If
they do,thanks to God,if not;then maybe you will find reasons to
comprehend what I'm about telling you. The America government was shutdown and on the announcement of the shutdown; Barack Obama cancelled his international trip to settle the differences in the polity and get everyone back to work again. It took days of
negotiations, tempers were flaring but at the end of the...
day,the system
was reopened;at least for now. During those days, all the agencies of
government were in talks and solidarity to find the best way to settle
the lingering issues. Nobody reneged on a meeting on the stance of
corruption or insincerity;they,in all there opposition and
differences, were determined to reach one end: better lives for the
American people.
Now bringing us back to Nigeria, how can you tell ASUU to go back to
the classrooms when some people buy cars for 225 million? How can you
tell them that the government has no money to meet their demands when
Julius Berger used 95 million naira on a field? A field Keshi termed
as "bad" for football. Are these lecturers not part and parcel of this
system? Don't they read the papers and see how resources are diverted
for the wrong purposes? The tertiary institutions has been short down
for months and someone is busy bagging honorary doctorate degree
abroad...isn't that a sing of insanity? Your house is on fire and
you're dancing kukere in another man's house. I have always said that
our problem in Nigeria is that of misplaced priorities and public
officers not comprehending their roles in the society as leaders and
role models.
If its to beg,I will plead with both parties to reach a decision
soonest. Whatever may be the reason for this bruhaha,I doubt if anyone
will still believe it is only that 2009 agreement that is fuelling
this action. And to shift a little, please where is Labaran Maku? I
don't hear his voice too much these days. To ASUU,I plead that you
should close your eyes to the mismanagement inherent in our polity and
return to class. To the authorities, its clear education is not a
priority for the most populous black nation on earth... most populous
indeed. I feel ashamed that in a country as rich as Nigeria, the
education sector has been shut down for 4 months while people;old
adults are fighting over New PDP or Old one....kai...are these men
sane at all? Somebody should knock their head seriously.
While waiting for when ASUU will call off the strike (I don't want to
put soon because that "soon" is like the one in Jesus is coming
soon),I pray that our students will be useful to themselves and manage
this time very well,so that when we must've succeeded in getting to
the Promised Land, you will pass me a glass of water and thank God for
the gift of grace for the race.
