(A STORY) THE VC’S LIST - Ugochukwu Ugonna

Nneoma was sweating profusely. No one in the commercial bus could understand why someone would be sweating despite the strong harmattan breeze, but Nneoma knew why she was sweating. Although it was only visible that her palms and face was sweaty, Nneoma was actually sweating more on her buttocks. She could not sleep the previous night, since she heard about the supplementary list of Nnamdi Azikiwe University. After swindling her of about seventy thousand naira in early October, Big-Ben had promised Nneoma that her name would be on the next admission list. Nneoma had heard of how people were swindled of their money by admission racketeers and never believed she would fall a victim.

When Nneoma couldn’t find her name on the first admission list released by Unizik, she was really worried and didn’t want to take chances on loosing this year’s admission. This was the third time she was writing JAMB and post-utme, and she didn’t want the admission year to elude her. Although she followed up the admission with prayers and fasting, Nneoma saw it as an answer to her prayers when her secondary school classmate Ebele, who was now a 300 Level Economics student in Unizik introduced her to Big Ben. According to Ebele’s testament, Big Ben was instrumental to her own admission in 2013 when she got admitted into unizik to study Economics. So this made Nneoma to have a little faith that this one could be real. But after the second list was released in November, and Nneoma could not find her name on it, she became very restless. But Big Ben kept on assuring her not to worry, that everything is under control. Nneoma vividly remembers their discussion that fateful day in November after the second list was released;
“Nneoma, don’tu worry at all, Nne, I have given your name and post-utme result to Joe. I don settle am sef, ighotago?” Big Ben had said with his thick Igbo accent.
“Who be Joe?” Nneoma had asked.
“Ah ah, na Joe be VC nah.”
“So na VC you dey call ‘Joe’ ”?
“Na my guy na. Even before he became the VC, we don tey for this game. So chillax, nothing mega.”

But after the third list, which was the supplementary list hit the internet on Sunday 6th December, 2015 and Nneoma could still not find her name, she lost all sense of decorum – seventy thousand wasn’t a chicken fee, besides all the money didn’t come from her parents but from her own sweat too.

All attempts to reach Big Ben on the phone the previous night had been futile as Big Ben refused to pick any of the calls Nneoma put through to him. She therefore resolved to visit the campus and meet him face to face and have him explain why she could still not find her name on the supplementary admission list which is believed to be the last admission list for the year.

Nneoma arrived Awka from her home town Ezeagu Village in Enugu at about 1pm on Monday 7th November, 2015. Although she had no idea where to find Big Ben, she only hoped that she would go to her Ebele’s hostel in Ifite and ask for her help in locating Big Ben since she was the one who introduced him to her.

On getting to favour hostel Ifite where Ebele lived, Nneoma was greeted with the news that Ebele had packed out of the lodge and moved to a new hostel a few weeks back, and nobody was aware of Ebele’s new hostel. The last straw that broke the camel’s back was when Nneoma dialed her number, and it was saying that the line has been blocked.
Nneoma found herself on the floor in front of the hostel gate sobbing uncontrollably. She couldn’t believe this was happening to her.
Martin Beck Nworah was passing by when he saw this beautiful fair girl sitting on the floor crying. On taking a closer look, he saw that the girl was so endowed with plenty body features, and so he approached her hoping to solve her problems and win her heart. After all #ZikitesUSNConnect was coming up by weekend, and he hasn’t gotten any babe for the event.
After Nneoma explained her predicament to Martin Beck Nworah, he did not even know what to do. He just bent towards Nneoma, held her shoulders and tried to console her, but she cried the more
“Where do I start from now?” She continued to sob, “I’ve already spent seventy thousand on this admission, and to make matters worse, I’ve bought all the things I need to use and come back to school, I have even bought my ticket to attend #ZikitesUSNconnect, but now I can’t find my name on the admission list. What will I tell all my friends that I have previously told that I have gotten admission, how do I explain to them that I am still at home when school have started since November? Even my facebook friends that have been thanking God with me and telling me congrats. What do I do now for God’sake.”
“Maybe you should try calling that your Big Ben again. Use my phone just in case he is avoiding your number.” Martin Beck Nworah suggested and gave his phone to Nneoma.
She collected the phone quickly and dialed Big Ben’s number.
“Helloo! Kedu Onye n’ekwu?” Big Ben’s thick igbo accent came on the line almost immediately.
“Big Ben, this is Nneoma Okafor on the line.”
“Oh! Nneoma, have you seen your admission status?”
“No, that’s why I’ve been calling you since yesterday but you have been avoiding my calls.” Nneoma replied.

“Avoiding your call? Maka gini kwa nu? Go and check your admission status and give me the good news. I saw the VC’s list last night and your name was there.”
“Really? But I have checked my admission status online and I didn’t see my admission.”
“No nah! This one is not online, this one is the VC’s list, you won’t find it online. Go to the admin block and check your name on the list in VC’s office. The one online is the supplementary list, it is different from the VC’s list. Go and check iti over there.” Big Ben said and quickly dropped the call.

Nneoma’s face lit up a little as she handed over the phone to Martin Beck Nworah and sped off to the admin block. She didn’t even tell Martin the outcome of the phone call, and while she was running off after handing him the phone, Martin was calling her, to at least drop her number so that he would keep in touch, but Nneoma did not wait to listen to him, the only thing on her mind now was the admission list…the almighty VC’s list which cannot be found online, but only in the VC’s office.

It was Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the director of Information and Public Relations that Nneoma met as soon as she stepped into the VC’s waiting room.
“Please Sir, Do you know where they pasted the VC’s list?” Nneoma asked.
“VC’s list of what?” Dr. Ojukwu asked
“The admission list Sir. The one released last night, Sir.” Nneoma replied.
“Yes, the Supplementary admission list is out, you can check it online.”
“No sir, not the supplementary list, I mean the admission list, the VC’s own list. Big Ben told me that they did not put that one online, that I can only find it in the VC’s office.” Nneoma insisted.

“Young lady, if you have been extorted, please go and find the person you gave money to and collect it back, admission into Unizik is free. What we have at the moment is the first list, the second list and the supplementary list that has just been released. There is no such thing as the VC’s list.”

With the dashed hopes of being an undergraduate in 2015, the fear of writing another JAMB and post-utme in 2016, the stress of preparing for jamb, crossing the hurdles and travelling up and down for Post-utme, facing shame on facebook and twitter where her friends had already started telling her congratulations on her fake admission news, and most especially the potential reality that she would miss out on the BIGGEST Zikites event #ZikitesUSNconnect on Saturday 12th December 2015, caused Nneoma to slump to the floor and become unconscious.

My First Time - MARTIN BECK NWORAH (MBN)

In the early hours of December 5th 2015 around 2am, I did what I have never done in life. I was at the Anambra Exclusive Youth Choice Awards where I won two awards as the Best Writer in Anambra State for 2015 and the Best SUG official in Anambra State for 2015. Basking in the euphoria of my new acquired celebrity status, I decided to ask a beautiful lady for her number. Now, as Martin Beck Nworah, I have never directly requested for a lady's number all my life...I'm serious. I'll simply get it from your friend or somehow, I will just get it but I won't directly request for it especially in a social event. But this one, I wanted to try my stars because she was sitting in the same table of five with me and her friends.
"Hello dear, will you attend my event ‪#‎ZikitesUSNConnect‬?" I felt the promise of a fun-filled event would do the magic sharp sharp.
"I will come only if you give me a free ticket" she said smiling.
"Give you free ticket? Nne, ina eme for free?" Like seriously, I asked her that. She gave me a look...like are you okay? Me...as a sharp Onitsha boy...I just "boned" her.
"Well, if you won't give me a free ticket to your show, I'm not coming." She retorted with a disgusted look on her face.
I wanted to give up but what I was seeing were the exact things my mum warned me about concerning Unizik babes. Just like Orezi talked about Enugu girls in Reggae Blues, these one is a perfect spec that made Flavour put two different ladies in a family way...but MBN 'haf' seen things. So I upped my game... I must get this babe's number.
"Ok. Here's the thing. If you want free ticket, you'll give me your number and I'll call you to pick it up." In my mind, I couldn't imagine I was asking a random girl for her number. Chai! A whole mummy's boy like me....chai chai chai. In fact, I always find it difficult to talk to ladies and that's why I'm still a stainless saint till now 'sef'. Don't bother to check or confirm though.
"If you want my number, I won't give it to you because you'll start calling and disturbing me."
"Me? MBN? Call you? For what kwanu? Ok fine. I would probably call to ask you if you've accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour. As for me, I don't do all these bad bad things young people do on campus. Tell me your favourite song and I'll rhyme it...hopefully, I'll romantically win the right to get your number."
"Hahahahaha. Ok ooooo. But I won't give it to you."
At this stage...mehn I don provoke.
"Bia nne, leave all this grammar and my funnee oooo. Anam asi gi give me your number ina ako yati yati here. Ima onye m bu? You sabi me? Nne enwerem conne oooo. In fact...gerarahere with your number. For reall mehn."
1. I created a scene.
2. I never got the number.
3. I was left alone in the table all alone by myself.
...and just when I was about to hook up with another babe with a red mini gown in a different table to try my luck, one man just sat on a seat adjacent to mine and proudly announced.
"Guy you fine die...I'm tripping for you."
I just passed out.

HISTORY OF UNIZIKSUGNEWS MEDIA (USN)

In the 2012/2013 Academic session in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the Office of Public Relations SUG, under the creative and foresighted leadership of Comrade Obiora Ezenwa, created the first ever Zikites blog which lead to the birth of UnizikSugNews Media after the untimely death of the Giant Newspaper started the previous academic session by Comrade David Agu.

Comrade Obiora Ezenwa became the first Manager of the media team by virtue of his being the Union's Image maker/P.R.O. He recruited many gifted students and gave them the opportunity to explore their talents and become better. During the ill-fated ASUU strike of 2013, his office was the most active both on all channels on social media and by physical default as he worked around the clock to keep students informed. He laid a very good and strong foundation for the consolidation that is happening now.

Comrade Obiora Ezenwa handed over to Comrade Clinton Nwobu as the new SUG P.R.O for 2013/2014 academic session and by default, he became the new manager of the UnizikSugNews Media Team, the media arm of the Office of Public Relations, Students Union Government, Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Banking on continuity as a great asset, Comrade Clinton consolidated on the gains of his predecessor and went ahead to maintain USN by increasing students participation in the visit of the USN blog and social media outlets. He perfectly made sure the students still held the Office of Public Relations in high regards as the most functional office in the Students Union.

Wildly celebrated as the only Union official in the history of Students Union elections in Nnamdi Azikiwe University who won his election through social media, Martin Beck Nworah (MBN) was elected as the P.R.O of the S.U.G in the 2014/2015 academic session to take over from Comrade Clinton Nwobu and by default, he became the 3rd substantive manager of UNIZIKSUGNEWS MEDIA TEAM. With lots of expectations from an office of such magnitude in terms of information dissemination for a federal university with more than 50,000 people (both students, lecturers, workers and administrators), Martin Beck Nworah set out to re-brand and upgrade the media services of USN.

In January of 2015, he recruited over 30 students to help in gathering information from all the faculties in the university. By the middle of that year, UnizikSugNews Media was averaging a total of 63,057 unique visitors every month on the divergent social media platforms on the internet. Martin Beck Nworah initiated so many fun and interactive ways of keeping the students informed and entertained which included the "Chinua Achebe morning quote", "Unizik News Updates at 5pm", "#hashtag night convo at 9:30pm", "Saturday Special Feature Story", e.t.c.

Towards October 2015, Martin Beck Nworah (MBN), the Image Maker of the union saw the need to extend the portfolio of UnizikSugnews Media to a print media. For the first time and through personal funding, the first ever USN magazine titled "After School, what next?" was published as a joint venture investment in late November and released to the public in December.

In addition to that, he is planning to organise the biggest Zikites event ever tagged #ZikitesUSNConnect where all Zikites that have been following USN's updates will gather for an evening of fun, dance, games and freebies.
At #ZikitesUSNConnect , EVERYONE that will attend the event will be going home with a copy of "After school, what next?" Magazine. Also, over 200 hundred copies of "Diary of a Unizik Babe" and some Unizik tags will also be given out to our ardent followers on Facebook during the "Lucky dip" at the event. You don't want to miss out on all of these and so much more. Metallic UNIZIK tags will also be given out.

Fun. Dance. Comedy. Games. Freebies. Chops!
Date: Dec.12!
Time: 6pm!
Venue: Fayrouz Spot Ifite!
The tickets for #ZikitesUSNConnect can be obtained for 1k only. Call 08144322744 to get yours now!

Finally, over the years, the Public Relations Officers of our Union have proven to be assets and they continually live up to their campaign promises. As another SUG election brews in the not-so-distant future, we hope someone who will continue this wonderful legacy will be elected by the students.

(A STORY) Ada and #ZikitesUSNConnect

"Ada Ada...wait naw ooo...Ada..nawa for you ooo...see how I'm shouting your name under this hot Unizik sun. You no get conscience?"

Ada has been my friend from way back in the days but I never really looked her way till this new session. The extended holidays helped in a great way in bringing out her beauty and body contours. For the first time in a long time, I'm actually thanking God for her beauty. She was walking up to the School gate from Destiny Pots and having refused to answer her calls few days ago, she decided to give me a little attitude.

"So MBN, you feel you can now snub my calls abi? All these small small girls that packed into your lodge don dey give you head abi?"

"Mba ooooo. Not really dear. See ehh... my sister's elder brother came around and I was discussing with him when you called. That's why I couldn't pick up. So...where are you rushing to?"

"I want to go and get my ticket for #ZikitesUSNConnect . I heard the lady issuing the ticket is wearing a branded #ZikitesUSNConnect polo and she is behind that photographer's stand at Garuba square, just opposite the bus stand."

I have been looking for an opportunity to hang out with her and I felt this is my chance. So I escorted her to the ticket stand.

"Ada, you know I have been asking you to give me a little space to love you but you keep telling me I'm your best friend. See ehhh, with this your new packaging, I'm leaving this friend zone by force oooo. Na wetin naw?"

"No wahala. I won't eat love. Come and pay for the ticket. I will consider giving you space. Oh...I just remembered; Nancy, Cindy, Amara and Chiomzy said they will also attend so you will buy tickets for them too. You will buy abi?"

"Anything for you my love. Even if it means spending my school fees on you, I will use Nairabet to replace it or I'll sell my phone."

"MBN...you are the man. Oya let's go. See the lady there. Nne good afternoon. Hope you are the one selling the tickets?"

Beaming with smiles, the lady handling the tickets responded in the affirmative and Ada nudged me to pay for the tickets.

"Errrm. Please, one ticket is how much biko?"

"1k only"

"1 gini? For one person or for seven people?"

"MBN, you see why I've not given you a peck since we became friends. You are just stupid and stingy. If you know what they will give the people that will attend #ZikitesUSNConnect on the 12th of December at Fayrouz Spot Ifite by 6:00pm, you will even pay more."

"Nne calm down joor. I have the money and conne...don't chance me abeg. In fact, tell me what they will even give you people sef"

"Ok. Everyone will go home with a copy of the mini-magazine, "After school, what next?", hundreds of people will win a copy of "Diary of a Unizik Babe" through the lucky dip, there will be drinks, chops, meats, games, comedy, dance, fun, etc. Everyone will be going home with something and the evening promises to be a very lively one. Some people will even win that beautiful Unizik metallic crested tags sef."

"Chai...all these things for just 1k?...the organisers tried ooo."

"Stay there naw...you think everybody will be as stingy and stupid as you. Come and take free love na. In fact, if you stare at my boobs again eehh, I'll pluck out your eyes. They wanted to make it free but the number of people attending increased a lot. But its worth it shaa. 1k is okay compared to what we will enjoy that day."

"So Ada, if I pay for these tickets now, you will give me small space to rock you that night abi?"

"Ogbeni, pay for tickets first."

"See, I know why I'm saying this ooooo. If you won't agree to give me space, lemme keep my money oooo. Hmmmmm...because people will separate our fight that night ooo."

"MBN! No wahala. Oya pay for ticket first. Relax. No be only rocking abi? Nsogbu adiro. Just pay."

"Ok. Hello, give me five tickets. Make it six because I will attend as well. So Ada, how about that your boyfriend, I heard he broke up with you and started dating a year 1 student with the looks of Kim K and the body of Nicki Minaj."

"Broke up gini? That idiot! He chases anything in skirt. Stupid guy. Biko let's discuss something else."

"So you never knew he was an idiot all these while you were enjoying his money from Destiny Pots to Shoprite abi?"

She turned and give me a stare that perfectly put me in my place and I shut my mouth.

"Here are the tickets Sir. We have marked it against your name here. On that day, you will receive everything stated here and more. Always call the attention of the ushers to attend to you whenever you need something."

"Errm Ada. I don't trust you. See ehh, I will go home with these tickets and give it to you that evening in front of Fayrouz. Wear that your white jean and don't wear a bum pad ooo."

"Hahahahahaha. Foolish boy. Biko gimme the tickets." She grabbed the tickets from my hand and walked away. "Come and rock fire naw...stingy head."

"Bia Ada...see ehhh, leave matter oooo. If I don't rock you that night. There will be trouble for me and you ooooo. This campus won't contain us ooo. Better gimme back those tickets so I will find better people to give it to ooooooo."

She laughed hard at me and shouted from afar.

"Gararahere mehn.... for real."

Court of Appeal sacks Sen. David Mark

The Court of Appeal, Makurdi Division, has annulled the election of the immediate past Senate President, Senator David Mark.
The Court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct fresh elections in the Benue South senatorial district within 90 days.

Mark’s victory at the March 28th., 2015 National Assembly elections, was challenged by Daniel Onjeh of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who petitioned the Benue state Legislative Houses elections tribunal asking for the cancellation of the election and an order detailing INEC to conduct fresh election in the district.

The Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu led trial panel had on October 7th., 2015 dismissed Onjeh’s petition on the ground that evidences tendered before the tribunal were documentary hearsay evidences.
However, in a unanimous judgement read by Justice Peter Ige, the appellate court dismissed the judgement of the tribunal and upheld the plea of the appellant that Mark’s election failed substantially to meet with the provisions of paragraphs 39 and 40 of the INEC approved electoral guidelines and sections 73 and 74 of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

The panel of jurists also questioned the failure of the trial court to admit evidences tendered by the appellant to canvass his case and in another instance refer to the same evidence to arrive at its decision.
Justice Ige thus held that, “the lower tribunal cannot be seen to blow hot and cold at the same time. The appellant has established his case on the balance of probability. It is our considered view that the appellant’s appeal is meritorious.

SEX, TERROR AND PEACE

The recent events in our world is enough to make one ask questions about the true essence or validity of living. I have been trying to ask myself this reasonable question but because of my excessive intake of doses of stupidity, I'm yet to make a headway. So I decided to discuss the three things that will make meaning in the end; sex, terror and peace.

My name is Martin Beck Nworah and I came out through sex, literally. In the beginning, sex has remained the physical cum biological process through which new and advanced species of the living being are born. In humans, the physical introduction of the penis into the feminine vagina cause sweet sensations to the brain and in the end, many enjoy the act while others curse themselves for not lasting long enough. From any angle you look at it, sex is sex. Seriously, whether you name it pre-marital sex, marital sex, post-marital sex, ante-natal sex, bedroom sex, over-the-counter sex or in our native parlance, "away match" for married couples who have sworn in their anger to keep on cheating till they die, that physical and sensational touch between the male and female will remain sex. It(sex) is not aware whether it is a christian, Buddhist, Muslim, underage, over age, premature or mature sex. And because it was created from the beginning, it will continue to remain with us. And since transgenders and gays have not figured out a way of getting themselves pregnant to keep the human race going, we have to still resolve to the old method of combining the male and female 'whatever' to produce a baby.

Dear Church-minded fellow; relax, you will get my point in this write-up soon. So don't flare up and report me to my pastor or parents.

So in the case of sex, we have settled the point, that it knows no christian or Muslim. We have also settled the fact that sex does not know whether it is holy or unholy; in truth, it becomes whatever you want it to become for you. Commonsense. So in all, sex is what it is; sex. Nothing more pretentious. If its so, does having sex with an under aged girl make sex bad? Does having sex with someone's spouse make sex an evil thing? I believe you will answer in the negative and rather condemn the very act of doing it with the wrong person. You won't say sex is bad. Oh sure, certainly it is not.
And please don't get in the mood by reading this, I am not advocating for free sex or any of the sort, I'm driving to a destination.

Terror on the other hand is what it is, terror. Or better still, terrorism will help us to comprehend the direction of this piece. As Martin Beck Nworah, one of my favourite channels on my pay tv is the Islam Channel. And if you've noticed, many pay as you view providers always place Islam and Christian stations close to each other. I don't know the rationale behind that decision. But here's the thing. If a man carries the bible, interprets the words to suit his purpose of deceiving you, does that make the bible or Christianity bad?

I have read the history of many of the world's terrorist organisations from Al-Qaeda, ISIL, Boko Haram, etc. That they hide under Islamic doctrines to perpetrate their dastardly acts is because they feel it perfectly covers their scheme of deception and hatred. In truth, that does not make Islam a religion of violence. But we have to also accept the fact that provided there is extreme inequality in the society, excessive and mindless pursuit of wealth by the political class and outright disobedience of the rule of law, terrorism will never leave the world. And each time it comes, it will come with a religious veil to hide its true intents. But does that make everyone who follows the ways and teachings of the Prophet to be a terrorist?

The non-stop bombings in Nigeria has led to many disgruntled citizens pointing fingers back and forth. And most recently to Facebook for not providing them a flag to cover their picture in solidarity. Really? A flag over your picture is the best you can offer? I would've loved to write at length on this subject but I'll leave it for another time. Social media should not become a standard through which we empathise with our fellow humans when tragedy strikes. If social media wants to replace our emotions and the real act of "going there" when you can, then our world is gradually heading for a society of cosmetic individuals who profess empathy ONLY by updating status or changing profile pictures. It is good, but it can never be enough.
I weep for our youths when we abuse each other back and forth on social media because of religious or tribal differences. Islam is not the bedrock of terrorism and Christianity is not the bedrock of salvation. You don't approve of one because it favours you and discard the other because you feel it produces results you don't like. To each, his own. Our world needs to be united against terrorism and not against the Islamic religion. We have to be more united against these elements who hide under the cloak of religion to rip us apart and cause disharmony between families and friends. Terrorism is terrorism. Terrorism is not Islam, it is not Christianity, it is not Buddhism and to aid our atheists, it has no foundation in whether you believe in God or not. Should I talk about tribe? I need not say much.

So placing sex and terrorism, you will quickly comprehend that these acts have no foundation in whether you are white or black, Igbo or Hausa, Christian or Muslim. It is what it. And if we are to succeed in this fight, we must procreate children who will grow up and be indoctrinated with the true tenets of living; that no matter who you are and where you have been, it is not right to hide under the cover of religion to perpetrate evil.

Oh peace? Yes it is here. With the deepest sense of humility and honesty, I, Martin Beck Nworah, a product of acute commonsense wishes to ask; can we really have peace in the world? You can answer that.

When kids are growing up, they often have this feeling of utopia where everything is good and there's no need to suffer or wail. As they grow into adults, the rhythm begins to change and the true comprehension of the world begin to stare them in the face. An ancient philosopher once said that we make war that we may live in peace. I don't know what to believe. But since the beginning of mankind, we have had relative peace. In the end, many argue that what we need is not the presence of absolute peace and tranquillity but the absence of unnecessary killings and political upheavals. I think I accept the latter observational statement. But in the end, we budget billions of dollars for security and pray for peace to reign in the world. Yet we build chemical weapons and develop mass destructive armoury to finish the world in a split second. But in the end, we want peace. And at this point, the philosopher will be laughing at his corner, "I told you, we make war so that we might live in peace."

Sex, terror and peace have just one thing in common. They define human race at any particular point in time. And no matter how we decide to deny this fact, it will continue to stare us in the face. Sex gives birth to individuals who carry out acts of terror in the world. Sex also produces the ones who preach and sue for peace in the world. So placing terror on one hand and peace on the other hand, sex stands in-between them. So I ask, should we now have better sex to produce better individuals in the world who will shun acts of violence and terrorism thereby allowing peace to reign? And let's not forget that education is also very important.

Till we get to the Promised Land, I shall be waiting for when you will pass me a glass of water and than God for the gift of grace for the race.
