Hope of early return to office by the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, was dashed on Wednesday when an Abuja Federal High Court refused an ex parte motion he filed, asking the court to declare illegal his suspension by President Goodluck Jonathan.
---- PUNCH NEWS

THREE of President Goodluck Jonathan’s successors-ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo; ex-Heads of State, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and Gen. Ibrahim Babangida – as well as President of the Senate, David Mark, were on Thursday absent from the country’s centenary being held in Abuja.
They did not attend the international conference held as part of activities marking the centenary, which was attended by about 30 heads of governments and international organisations.

In this interview, Senator Ehigie Uzamere told journalists why the Peoples Democratic Party deserved a second chance in Edo State and why he decided to return to the party he once derided. JOHN ALECHENU reports
You defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria. Now, you say you are defecting from the ACN to the PDP. Why?
You see, the first responsibility of a leader is to define reality; and the reality today in Edo State is that despite all the razzmatazz and media visibility, it is an unfortunate situation that we find ourselves in the present party and government in the state. I make bold to say that the people of Edo South are actually a people in bondage. And this is unacceptable. Many people see through all the façade but lack the courage to speak up. But now, I am showing the way and I expect my people to follow so that together, we can build afresh. Our people have a saying, ‘if you do not enter a house, you will never know the internal contradictions therein.’

ONDO SPEAKER DIES OF CANCER AT 61

Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr. Adesina Ajayi, is dead.
A statement from the Ondo State Government, signed by the Secretary to
the State Government, Dr. Aderotimi Adelola, said the former Speaker
died after a protracted battle with cancer of the urinary bladder.
Ajayi represented Odigbo Constituency 11 at the Ondo State House of
Assembly and was 61 years old.
The statement read, "The late Speaker, during his life time was a
bridge builder, a man of integrity and a reliable team player who
placed the interest of the state above personal consideration.
"The untimely death of the Speaker occurred in the early hours of
Tuesday, February 25, 2014 during a protracted battle with the
cancer of the urinary bladder.
"The Ondo State Government received the news with rude shock and
disbelief and commiserates with the family of the late Speaker, the
state legislature as well as the entire people of the state on this
irreparable loss.
"It is our prayers that God will grant everyone of us the fortitude to
bear this loss."
Ajayi first became Speaker of the House in 2010 after the impeachment
of Hon. Taofeek Abdulsalam, then of the People's Democratic Party.
He was re-elected and returned as Speaker of the House after the 2011
elections, the position he held until his death on Tuesday.
Speculations over the nature of the deceased's ailment were rife after
his absence at the House in September, shortly after the Supreme Court
gave judgment on the election that brought in Governor Olusegun Mimiko
for a second term.
It was in fact rumoured at a time that Ajayi had died only for him to
resurface in December, saying that he was hale and hearty.
After that public appearance, the late Speaker had not been able to
attend the House sittings as he was said to have gone to seek medical
attention abroad.

'BECOME A GAY THEN...' BY MARTIN BECK NWORAH

From the start,I want to make it clear I have nothing against gays but
those advocating for their rights who are not gays. If its cool to be
an activist advocating for gay rights, why not become one then? After
all,the best way to preach a gospel is by example. Ngozi Adichie wrote
an article few days ago in defence of gays and I really love her
piece. I have just one advice for her,"Become a gay please". I have
friends who are lesbians, homosexuals, those who "do it" with
animals(especially dogs and goats) and I'm cool with them. The issue
of their sexuality is a topic we don't bring up because we share
divergent views about it. When it comes to gays,I'm indifferent about
it all. After all,we are not sure who is doing the right thing or not.
We are acting based on what we think is best for our human society.
For Nigeria and her anti-gay law,its all good. The strong point I'm
just trying to make is simple;if you must fight for gay rights, become
one. You have to practice what you preach and be proud of it. "I'm gay
and I'm proud of it,I'm the President of the United States of
America"...that's what we need. You cannot marry a woman, bear children
and you are advising us to keep our sexual orientation as gays. NO!
You must practice what you preach. But if you're not so keen in
becoming one as you advocate the rights, then shut up. I'm sick and
tired of people shouting that gays should be left alone, can you as a
staff of Fidelity Bank,be shouting at the employers at UBA to pay her
staff? If you must shout, then you must be one of them.
Being gay is cool and I believe if everybody was open like Ellen about
their sexual orientation, all these rantings will stop. I don't hate
gays and I don't like them. Like I said,I'm indifferent about them and
I have them as friends. The only problem they have is with their
sexual orientation which many acquired as a result of what the society
made them to become. The society ofcourse should not be blamed for our
failure in life because we must take responsibility for our actions.
So to all the gays in Nigeria,my advice to you is very clear. Come out
in the open and tell the world that you're gay. You will be prosecuted
and sent to prison for 14 years because its against our laws. But at
least, you're suffering for what you believe in "abi"? At least,by the
time a handful of gays are in prison, the government may construct a
separate jail for you. To those advocating for gay rights who are not
gays, please become one. Practice what you preach. Chimamanda Adichie
and other public figures advocating for gays in Nigeria, please become
a gay. The prison is not exclusive to some people alone,it can as well
accommodate the rest of you. So return to Nigeria and become a gay.
Till we get to the Promised Land,I shall be waiting for when you will
pass a glass of water and thank God for the gift of grace for the
race.

160 MILLION INSIGNIFICANT NIGERIANS BY MARTIN BECK NWORAH

The population of Nigeria is nearing 170 million and I pray you
forgive me for calling 160 million of them insignificant(I might as
well be among them). In a country so rich and blessed as Nigeria, with
a few clique enjoying the wealth of the nation, the rest can easily
pass as being insignificant. One man defected to another
party, thousands of people were clapping and hailing him. He stood on
the podium and ordered all of them to defect with him, they're shouted
and agreed to do his biding. Does it mean they don't have a choice of
their own? Can't they decide whether they want to remain in their
present party or not? Wait! Are they really a member of the so-called
party?
The poverty eating deep in our society is that of the mind and not
solely of the pocket. When a man becomes so insignificant that others
decide his life for him,he can't stand out and insist on his right.
Sadly enough,he is not even aware of his right. Many strongly believe
that their own dividends of democracy is in that 5,000 naira and bags
of rice they get during the elections. The future and life of close to
160 million people is being played like a video game by less than 1
million people. And everybody is okay with that. Once I can eat well
and sleep in a house, why worry whether 20 billion dollars is missing
from the federation account? I pray, hope and work hard we get better.
But if the present situation in Nigeria is anything to go by,then more
insignificant people are coming up. Youths even go to the extent of
preferring to watch "Cartoon Network" than pay attention to current
affairs in the polity.
The old soldiers have refused to exit the stage and the new ones are
losing hope. The opinion of Nigerians is really nothing to be reckoned
with because they are "insignificant". The worst is to make noise in
the media, two or three weeks after, everyone goes home to enjoy a few
naira notes he got from calling out the "big men". When next you meet
him,he will tell you that Nigeria was like this before he came and he
won't be the one to change 160 million people. Its all good. I
pray, hope and work hard that my generation will be better. Till we get
to the Promised Land,I shall be waiting for when you will pass me a
glass of water and thank God for the gift of grace for the race.

JONATHAN SUSPENDS LAMIDO SANUSI AS CBN GOVERNOR

President Jonathan has announced the suspension of the Central Bank of
Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
This was made known in a statement signed Thursday by Reuben Abati
Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity).
The statement reads thus
Having taken special notice of reports of the Financial Reporting
Council of Nigeria and other investigating bodies, which indicate
clearly that Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi's tenure has been
characterized by various acts of financial recklessness and misconduct
which are inconsistent with the administration's vision of a Central
Bank propelled by the core values of focused economic management,
prudence, transparency and financial discipline;
Being also deeply concerned about far-reaching irregularities under
Mallam Sanusi's watch which have distracted the Central Bank away from
the pursuit and achievement of its statutory mandate; and
Being determined to urgently re-position the Central Bank of Nigeria
for greater efficiency, respect for due process and accountability,
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has ordered the immediate suspension
of Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from the Office of Governor of the
Central Bank of Nigeria.
President Jonathan has further ordered that Mallam Sanusi should hand
over to the most senior Deputy Governor of the CBN, Dr Sarah Alade who
will serve as Acting Governor until the conclusion of on-going
investigations into breaches of enabling laws, due process and mandate
of the CBN.
The President expects that as Acting Governor of the Central Bank, Dr.
Alade will focus on the core mandate of the Bank and conduct its
affairs with greater professionalism, prudence and propriety to
restore domestic and international confidence in the country's apex
bank.
The Federal Government of Nigeria reassures all stakeholders in
Nigeria's financial and monetary system that this decision has been
taken in absolute good faith, in the overall interest of the Nigerian
economy and in accordance with our laws and due process.

ONLY STUPID WOMEN GET MARRIED WITHOUT HAVING A JOBB - ANGELA OKORIE

Angela thinks its only a stupid woman that marries without having a
job or work of her own.
According to her "Any woman who goes into marriage without engaging in
meaningful thing must be stupid. No matter how small, let the man see
that you are hardworking.
It doesn't make sense for any woman to sit in the house and just be
bearing children all the time. You have to look for something to do to
help the man. If a woman is working, there are certain things she
doesn't need to ask the man to provide for. It's not enough to get
married to a rich man."
The actress who is a wife and mother seem to share her opinions a lot
about marriage, relationships, she was quoted in an interview as
saying "My husband cannot cheat on me because I satisfy him in
everything".
She also spoke on her marriage, saying "Some men are better actors
than most of us. A lot of them tell lies. Both of you have to sit down
and discuss the issue. I'm not going to say I didn't have issues in my
relationships before getting married to my husband. I don't think
marriage is supposed to be frustrating. You should marry your friend,
your partner and not just anybody that comes your way.
You should marry someone who knows you and knows what you want and
will encourage you in whatever you want to do. But at the same time,
because you are married, you need to cut down on some things. As for
me, I put my marriage first before any other thing."

SHOCKING: THIS NIGERIAN WOMAN WAS PREGNANT FOR 4YEARS

This is so shocking, but may God's name be praised as her enemies were
disgraced when she eventually gave birth to a bouncing baby boy.
Before she was finally delivered of the baby on December 13th, 2013,
Oluchi a mother of two, who hails from Ndiagbor in Aninri Local
Government Area of Enugu State, had to be abandoned by her husband
Azuka Uchendu when she couldn't deliver after two years. The woman who
narrated her 4-year ordeal to Sun at Oji-River alleged that at a
point, her husband taunted her with the pregnancy saying that she
merely had a swollen stomach.
She also disclosed that her husband who hails from Mgbidi in Awgu LGA
of Enugu later eloped with another woman when the crisis continued.
According to her:
"I took-in in 2010 and was attending ante-natal clinic. By the 5th
month I was given date for delivery. But at the sixth month I started
seeing my period again; at the hospital they told me that the child
was going down and wasn't growing any longer...
"They sent me an ultra sound scan which was negative indicating that
there was no child in the womb.
In 2012 a man gave me some money and asked me to go The Lord's Chosen
headquarters in Lagos that I will be freed.
I went as directed but nothing happened. By then my husband had left
me and went to live with another woman in Ituku.
I continued running around for solution to my problem; I packed out
from where we were staying at Dodo in Oji and moved down to Achi.
"While the hospitals say that the baby was no longer there, prayer
houses kept telling me that I was carrying a male child and that his
name will be Jeremiah.
They continued to pray for me throughout 2012.
"In 2013 a man of God Pastor Faith told me that I was carrying a male child.
He also said that seven years after his delivery I should hand him
over to a pastor.
After a crusade in 2013 I started feeling something in my womb as
though someone was cutting a tape inside me.
After that a Pastor called Sunny from Enugu asked me to go for ultra
sound scan that God has destroyed what was used to cover the baby.
"Just as the Pastor prophesied, the ultra sound scan showed that I was
seven months pregnant.
Afterwards I continued going for prayers and was later given December
12 date for delivery.
But the date came and passed without any signs of labour so the next
day being Friday December 13th I went to Bethsaida (The Enugu healing
water).
"I went to the river and poured out my heart to God; I told Him that
my husband had abandoned me; that my husband's people taunt me that I
wasn't pregnant that I was carrying leather; while my husband says I
had swollen tummy.
"I asked God to show that He is God and shame the devil by delivering
me of the baby.
I also told God that I wouldn't want to go through caesarian operation
but should have safe delivery.
After my visit to Bethsaida on Friday the next day I went into labour
and by 3:30 am on Sunday I was delivered of this baby boy who I have
named Jeremiah as the men of God prophesied."
The woman who said she has not heard from her husband or his family
since she delivered appealed to well meaning Nigerians to assist the
new born baby and her 7-year-old daughter as they live on charity
without any major means of livelihood.

Governor T. A Orji's son allegedly ordered the killing of his aide in
a political gathering in the state on Saturday February 15th 2014.
CKN Nigeriareports today:
Son to Governor T.A Orji of Abia State, Chinedu Orji aka "IKUKU"
yesterday displayed another level of his usual unruly and criminal
behavior at the Okpara square, Umauhia, venue of the official
declaration of his father's senatorial ambition ahead of the 2015
general elections.
"IKUKU", the self acclaimed Governor of the state, who was angered by
the utterance of his late PA over a minor issue, directed his police
orderly to shoot the late aide. All efforts to save the victim did not
yield any result as he lost blood profusely. The ugly development did
not allow the event hold as planned as people took to their heels
leaving the place deserted.
An eye witness at the venue who spoke under anonymity stated that he
was shocked when the Governor's son, Chinedu directed his orderly to
shoot the late aide over a minor misunderstanding. He decried the
humiliation Abians have been subjected to, by the actions of the
Governor's son, since his father took over the mantle of leadership.
He called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the
unlawful and unprofessional behaviour of the Governor's son and his
orderly respectively.

FG, ASUU IN FRESH COLLISION COURSE

CULLED: PUNCH

Allegation of dilly-dallying on the part of the Federal Government in
implementing the 2013 agreement reached with the Academic Staff Union
of Universities has raised concerns in the nation's education sector.
But both parties seem to be taking the situation in their strides,
writesGBENGA ADENIJI
Students of public universities in Nigeria and their parents are yet
to get over the over five-month-old strike suspended on December 17
last year by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The union
commenced the strike on July 1, 2013 because of the Federal
Government's failure to implement the 2009 agreement it reached with
it.
It was thus disturbing last week when one of the union leaders raised
the alarm that the FG was delaying in implementing the fresh agreement
it made with the union in 2013. Some stakeholders were particularly
angered by the development considering the meetings, appeals and
confrontations that took place before the suspension of the 169 days
strike.
The National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said in Ibadan, Oyo
State, that the FG was foot-dragging in the execution of the
Memorandum of Understanding on the NEEDS projects it signed with the
union.
Aremu said the allocation of the funds claimed to have been lodged at
the Central Bank of Nigeria for the execution of the NEEDs projects
had not started two months after the suspension of the strike by the
union.
He added that the FG should have commenced the process of depositing
an extra N55bn for the first quarter based on the MoU signed with
President Goodluck Jonathan.
At the meeting, Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter of the union,
Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, also reportedly noted that students were yet to
start benefitting from the strike because of the FG's delay in
implementing the agreement.
He also urged the FG not to further delay in implementing its part of
the MoU so as to forestall fresh crisis in the nation's public
universities.
The Chairman, Enugu State University of Science and Technology branch
of ASUU, Prof. Gabriel, Agu, who said he would not comment on the
matter, however said the National Executive Committee of the union
would meet to deliberate on some salient issues relating to the
union.
He said, "We will wait for the outcome of our NEC meeting before
making comment."
Aremu also refused to make further comments on the matter when our
correspondent called him on the phone. He did not pick his calls and
also didn't respond to the text message sent to his phone.
The Education Rights Campaign however noted that it was not surprised
at the alarm raised by ASUU. The group said the situation showed what
unions like the ASUU and Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics
including Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union often suffer in
the hands of the FG.
Lamenting that the union has consistently been a victim of FG's
insincerity, it advised it to continue to expose the inadequacies of
government towards public education.
According to it, the delayed implementation of the MoU is another
worrisome indication that more crises are to be expected in the
nation's public university system.
It added, ''Regrettably, instead of increasing, allocation to
education suffered a decline in the 2014 appropriation bill.
Therefore, even if funds are fully released for the implementation of
the MoU, in the long run, not much positive changes would occur in the
universities because of the decline in budgetary allocation.
Therefore, it is not only the MoU that ASUU should agitate for, it
should also fix its gaze at the 2014 appropriation bill with a view to
mobilising for improvement in the provisions for education. No one
should be deceived.''
The group also noted that without overall improvement in government's
budgetary provision to education and the existence of democratic
management structures in the universities to ensure judicious use of
the funds, huge intervention funds would fail to revamp the public
universities.
''According to the 11th Education-For-All Global Monitoring Report by
the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation,
Nigeria's education sector faces a bleak future that it will not meet
the Education-For-All Goals 1, 2 and 4 by the year 2015. For instance,
Nigeria has over 40 million illiterate adults. Fifty-three years after
independence, when the benefit of education is no more a matter of
argument, 40 per cent of its youths are stark illiterates while 5 per
cent of the poorest young women are literates compared to 90 per cent
of the richest, '' it added.
A postgraduate student in one of the federal universities in the
country, Mr. Olatunbosun Taofeek, urged the government to ensure
prompt implementation of the agreement.
He said it was dangerous for any government to gamble with education.
Taofeek said, ''There is no wisdom in playing with the destinies of
youths. Education is too important for any government to joke with.
Giving attention to other sectors more than the education sector is
tantamount to moving on a fast speed but in a wrong lane.''
A student at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Mr. Chibuzor Bright,
stated that there would be little attempt to revive public varsities
because children of public office holders attend schools abroad and
private institutions in Nigeria.
Bright said the lackadaisical attitude of government towards public
education was aimed at "crippling it in order to shift attention to
private institutions."
Before the strike was suspended last year, the government promised to
inject N1.3tn into public universities between 2013 and 2018. Apart
from the injection of N220bn yearly into the varsities from 2014, it
pledged to domicile N200bn in a special account at the Central Bank of
Nigeria for the rest of 2013.
The union then demanded among other things, proper monitoring and
verification of the N30bn released last year by the government and
provision of N1.3tn for the renewal of the university system from 2013
to 2018.
Speaking with our correspondent, the Special Assistant (Media) to the
Coordinating Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, Mr. Simon Nwakadu,
said there was no cause for alarm.
Saying members of the NEEDS Assessment committee met during the week,
Nwakadu added that the process of allocation of resources was ongoing.
He also said members of the union who are part of the committee were
in attendance.
He said, ''This was the third time the committee was meeting. It is a
process that every benefitting university must follow. It is the
President that implemented the NEEDS Assessment himself and he is
committed to it success.''
ASUU National Chairman, Dr. Nasir Faggae, while calling off the strike
last year said the union expected the already inaugurated
implementation monitoring to work assiduously to ensure the process of
revitalisation of Nigerian public universities.
He was optimistic that such would make the nation's university
education receive the much needed boost in order for students and
their parents to see the fruits of ASUU's struggles.

SUNDAY'S RELECTION

A champion is d victor, the one winning, the overcomer. A champion is
also the representative of the people, the best the people can
offer. The greatest champion in human history is no other dan d Lord
Jesus Christ. Hence d popular song in Nigerian Pidgin English says:
"Winner o o o, Winner! 2x
Jesus you don win o, Winner!
Patapata you go win forever, Winner!"
You may wonder: why is Jesus d greatest champion? Jesus engaged d
greatest enemy of mankind - Satan, and defeated him.Dis was prophesied
in Genesis 3:15.D outcome of d contest is in Hebrews 2:14-15.In
addition to Satan,Jesus also overcame sin (Hebrews 4:15) and d world
(John 16:33).Jesus is d number one Winner,He is d all-time Winner.D
battle He won,He however won for u. I have a good news 4 u today: dat
battle u re facing right now is a fall-out of dat old battle which
Jesus already won 4 u.D Bible says dat Jesus destroyed Satan so dat u
might be delivered. You re delivered right now 4rm dat evil bondage nd
yoke of sickness, be it physical, financial, mental or emotional in
Jesus' Name. Furthermore,Jesus defeated d archenemy 4 u,in order 2
make u a champion. You re a divine champion bcus u re raised up nd
supported by God (1 Samuel 2:8, Romans 8:31). Irrespective of d
current situation nd status of d individual being made into a champion
by God,by d time God finishes wit him or her, he or she will become an
amazement nd wonder. 1 Samuel 2:8 says dat God raises d prospective
divine champion out of d dust nd lifts d beggarly 4rm d dunghill 2
make him keep company with princes. Dis means dat d beggar becomes
like a prince, and by every standard, his level changes. He no longer
belongs in d dunghill. Dis is wat our God is capable of doing. What
low estate can be worse dan dwelling in a dunghill i.e. becoming
dependent on picking nd scavenging in d refuse dump? Your case might
not be dat bad, but even if it is, congratulations, your condition is
about to change drastically. Only let d Lord Jesus Christ into ur
heart.

EVERYONE IS A GENIUS BY MARTIN BECK NWORAH

I came across a post yesterday and it really soothe my heart.
"Everyone is a genius, but trouble starts when you begin to judge a
fish by its ability to climb a tree". It really made sense to me. Many
times,we judge our ability by what we see others doing or what our
peers have achieved at a particular age but we've not. We feel because
we are better academically than others,it must translate to success in
real life. So when we don't receive that which we ordinarily feel is
ours,we begin to doubt our ability and faith in God.
But wait, some where along the line,I have a strong feeling that we
don't really accept our self the way we are and judge our self
honestly. Everyone is destined to succeed but at a different pace.
Every individual is in this race of life alone and trying to convince
someone that running faster than he should on a different life track,
is denying the person a golden opportunity to discover himself and
become great. Everyone is unique and special. Everyone can succeed, but
we must always have it at the back of our mind that life is not a
straight forward race. Everyone is a genius. And we can discover this
fact if we strive hard and discover our true calling in life. It is
not easy I know and nobody promises us a bed of roses. We must make
the rose our self and welcome the thorns it comes with. We can all
succeed and enjoy the good things of life;but we must work hard and
grow at our own pace. There is no rush. Tiny drops of water will
certainly get you to that Promised Land. We are in this race together
and I know God will certainly see us through. Till we get to the
Promised Land,I shall be waiting for when you will pass me a glass of
water and thank God for the gift of grace for the race.

HENRY OKAH BREAKS JAIL, RE-ARRESTED IN S-AFRICA

Leader of the defunct Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND,
Henry Okah, serving a 24-year jail term for terrorism in South Africa
and four other inmates, attempted breaking jail, Vanguard learnt,
yesterday.
Spokesman for South Africa's Department of Correctional Services,
Manelisi Wolela, who confirmed the botched effort told reporters: "I
can confirm that Okah is one of the five inmates that attempted to
escape and whose efforts were foiled."
He did not give details of the attempted escape from Leeukop Prison in
Northern Johannesburg that is said to have taken place last month.
Okah was convicted last year and sentenced on a 13-count charge of
terrorism, including twin bombings that killed 12 people in Abuja
during the country's 50th Independence anniversary in 2010.
He was arrested, tried and convicted in South Africa where he has
permanent residency.
The department said most of the offenders involved in the botched
escape bid were serving life sentences for serious offences, including
murder, kidnapping and robbery.
Correctional services officials, however, said security at the prison,
which recorded 11 attempted jail breaks in the 12 months until March,
last year, had been tightened.
Judge Neels Claaseen, last year, sentenced Okah to 24 years in prison
having found him guilty in the 13-count charge of acts of terrorism.
The judge stated that the struggle of the Movement for the
Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), "is politically motivated and as a
result a maximum sentence for Okah will be inappropriate."
He said South Africa, being a signatory to the UN Treaty on Terrorism
Acts allowed the convict to be tried in South Africa though the events
took place in Nigeria.
"As a signatory, South Africa is duty-bound to adopt the treaty and
incorporate it into the laws of South Africa, in other words domicile
the treaty," Mr. Claaseen said.
He asserted it was the responsibility of the court in sentencing the
convict to take into account the feelings of the world community and
to make South Africa unpalatable for terrorists to operate within the
jurisdiction as member of the community of nations.
The three events/crimes
Mr. Claaseen said all the 13 counts Mr. Okah was convicted of were
related to three events:
"The first event was the March 15, 2010 bomb attack, where two car
bombs occurred at the venue of a political gathering which was being
attended by the Delta State Governor in Warri, Delta State, where one
person died and several others were injured.
"The second event occurred on October 1, 2010, in Abuja, where two car
bombs exploded, killing eight people with several others injured.
"Third event is the threat to the Nigerian government.
"All these three events were targeted at embarrassing President
Goodluck Jonathan," Mr. Claaseen said.
He said these acts were very serious crimes which must be punished in
accordance with the terrorism laws.

UN COMMISSION URGES AFRICA TO ADOPT GREEN ECONOMY

The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), has advised African
countries to adopt the Green Economy model, to enhance the rapid
development of their economies.
Chief, Green Economy and Natural Resources at UNECA, Ms. Isatou Gaye,
gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
on Monday in Abuja.
NAN reports that green economy is seeking another way of pursuing
developmental objectives in a more efficient and environmentally
supportive manner.
According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), green economy is an
emerging concept, which "is generally low carbon, resource efficient
and socially inclusive model of development".
Isatou said that Africa countries should capitalise on their natural
resources and the entrepreneurship of their people, to transit from
economic growth to sustainable development.
"We know that Africa has been growing but this growth has really not
been inclusive and has not been job creating.
"When we talk about green economy, we are looking at an economic
system that advances growth, and at the same time ensures that this
growth is inclusive.
"And the resources that we use for this growth are used in an
efficient manner, and would curb the degradation on the environment.
"It is looking at the economic aspect, the environmental aspect, and
the social aspect of sustainable development.
"Ensuring that in our growth pathway or development pathway, we bring
what we now know as the three dimensions of sustainable development
into account, in a balanced manner.
"We have our natural resources to grow, but in doing so, we ensure
that this growth is broad-based, creates jobs and minimizes the
depletion and degradation of the environment," she said.
Isatou explained that the efficient use of Africa's natural resources
was necessary if the growth of the continent was to be beneficial to
its citizens.
According to her, the world is now talking about Africa's rising, and
there is hope for the emergence of the continent in the comity of
industrialised economies.
She said that agriculture in particular, played an important role in
the rapid economic development and the industrialisation of the
African continent.(NAN)
