PRESIDENT JONATHAN'S NEW YEAR MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS

Dear Compatriots,
I greet and felicitate with you all as we enter the year 2014 which
promises to be a momentous one for our country for several reasons,
including the fact that it is also the year of our great nation's
centenary celebrations. I join you all in giving thanks to God
Almighty for guiding us and our beloved nation safely through all the
challenges of the outgoing year to the beginning of 2014.
Exactly 100 years ago today, on January 1, 1914, the British Colonial
authorities amalgamated what was then the separate Protectorates of
Southern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria, giving birth to the single
geopolitical entity known as Nigeria. For us therefore, today is not
just the beginning of a new year, but the end of a century of national
existence and the beginning of another. It is a moment for sober
reflection and for pride in all that is great about Nigeria.
Whatever challenges we may have faced, whatever storms we may have
confronted and survived, Nigeria remains a truly blessed country, a
country of gifted men and women who continue to distinguish themselves
in all spheres of life, a country whose diversity remains a source of
strength. We pay tribute today, as always to our founding fathers and
mothers, and all the heroes and heroines whose toil and sweat over the
century made this country what it is today.
As I noted, a few days ago, the amalgamation of 1914 was certainly not
a mistake but a blessing. As we celebrate 100 years of nationhood, we
must resolve to continue to work together as one, united people, to
make our country even greater.
I assure you that our administration remains fully committed to the
progressive development of our country and the consolidation of peace,
unity and democratic governance in our fatherland. Despite several
continuing domestic and global challenges, for us in Nigeria, the year
2013 witnessed many positive developments which we will strive to
build upon in 2014. GEJ

"SUPER EAGLES WILL WIN 2014 WORLD CUP ON IF..." - GURU MAHARAJ JI PREDICTS

Guru Maharaj Ji was determined speaking about it He Said:
"I have said it and nothing will change it. If the Super Eagles
handler, Stephen Keshi, shows more love to Maharaj Ji, the true name
of the Almighty. He will lead the team to victory that will shock the
world.
"I want him and top shots of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to
visit Maharaj Ji Village and let us have a discussion. Let them come
and put Maharaj Ji's power to test. I cannot be here and Nigeria won't
be able to conquer the world.
"I told them before that Eagles will win the Nation's Cup and so it
was. The powers of Chukwujekwukwu will touch the players again and
they will have strength to run faster as children of the light than
any other team at the tournament. Nigerians should come and avail
themselves of the opportunity of the power now.
"Keshi should humble himself more. I foresee the cup coming to Nigeria
in 2014. Nigerians should stop doubting because the Living Perfect
Master is talking. I think by now government in its own wisdom would
have shown appreciation to me for the victory of Eagles at the last
Nation's Cup. They should know that it is only by encouraging me that
they receive more."
The Spiritual Leader proceeded:
"The players, particularly the goal keeper, should avoid wearing blue
jersey which was one of the things that caused initial problems for
the team during the Nation's Cup before an NFF top shot got across to
me to intercede. Blue is the colour of mermaid. That is not ideal for
any progressive development.
"I have said it loud and clear that the cup is within reach and
definitely it will come to Nigeria if the sports administrators and
the coaches take the advantage. I cautioned Samson Siasia, the former
Eagles' handler, but he retorted saying 'is Satguru God'? That
affected him and he was booted out.
"However, not only the Super Eagles, tell other national teams to come
and receive the power to excel and it shall be well with them at any
tournament,"he assured.

LOVE PROGRESSIVE PEOPLE BY MARTIN BECK NWORAH

I am always happy when I see new buildings and infrastructural
developments embarked upon by individuals. It gives me joy and hope
that inspite of the harsh economic condition in this country, people
are progressing and becoming successful everyday. I love progressive
people because I know I will get there for sure. What inspires me more
is their mindset. They don't see problems rather they see challenges.
They see opportunities to improve and become better. They capitalise
on what others see as failure to rise above normal human expectations.
If you're progressive,I respect you.
We need more people who will give us hope that we can still do the
right thing and succeed in this nation. Pessimists are really eating
deep into our polity these days and it is not healthy for our younger
generation. Why? Because when a child grows up with the notion that
things are bad and may never get better, the person does little or
nothing to improve his life. That is why you will hear things like,"my
father never succeeded doing that, and he warned me not to try it
because I will fail". Another will be brainwashed that all rich men
soiled their hand and he will end up getting more confused than his
problems. What we need are progressive individuals who will always
inspire us and inform us on how to turn our problems into
opportunities. I have had the luck of meeting several progressive
people and I owe a lot of what I have become today to them. I'm
grateful.
I love progressive people because you will feel the aura of
perseverance, consistency and hardwork when you're with them. When
faced with challenges, they never speak ill of their situation. They
simply brainstorm and find ways out of the challenge because they
understand what it means for a situation not to be permanent. They
understand that you have to pray to God and hand over everything into
his hands. But they also comprehend the fact that God will not do for
us men what he has ordinarily given us power to do for ourselves. That
is wisdom and the progressive spirit in action. They may not have
enough, but they will always share the little they have and will not
fail to motivate you to work hard because a glorious future is ahead.
They're already into the Promised Land, and I'm hoping that one day,I
will get there and share my glass of water with them as we thank God
for the gift of grace for the race.

EDUCATION COLLEGE LECTURERS BEGIN NATIONWIDE STRIKE TODAY

Members of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU)
have declared full industrial action nationwide effective from today.
COEASU made this known yesterday in a letter addressed to the
Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, a copy of which was
made available to National Mirror.
COEASU's grievances include infrastructural decay in collleges of
education, poor funding, nonimplementation of the 2010 FG-COEASU
agreement, poor conditions of service, brain drain and alleged illegal
imposition of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System
(IPPIS) on its members.
The association stated in a letter signed by its National President,
Asagha Nkoro and Ogirima, that the government directive to National
Commission for Colleges of Education to impose the IPPIS on colleges
without recourse to earlier meetings by concerned parties was
unsuitable.
Part of the letter reads: "While the government held series of talks
with the union leadership between September and December 2013,
evidence abound that government does not wish to keep her side of the
bargain in meeting the understanding reached at such meetings.
"This, without equivocation, is unacceptable to our union given the
peculiar high nuisance and volatile nature of the colleges of
education sector.
"More so, but for the constitution and inauguration of the Needs
Assessment Committee, government merely paid lip services to all other
issues, highlighted in our earlier correspondences".
Other complaints by the associations against the government are:
refusal to fund the Peculiar and Responsibility Allowances as
obtainable in Earned Allowances of the universities; refusal to
implement the migration of lower cadres as obtainable in polytechnics;
and non-accreditation of programmes of the colleges of education among
others.
In compliance with the resolution of its Expanded National Executive
Council Meeting, COEASU said its members had been directed to resume a
full scale strike action suspended earlier this year, "unless and
until government meets the demands.

PDP SUPPORTS TONY NWOYE SUIT AT ELECTION TRIBUNAL

The Peoples Democratic Party has thrown its support behind its
candidate for the Anambra Gubernatorial Election election, Tony
Nwoye's petition at the election tribunal.
The PDP had earlier endorsed the results released by INEC and
congratulated Willie Obiano, however Tony Nwoye protested the PDP's
endorsement of an opposition figure, and accused the Bamanga Tukur led
National Working Committee of acting in bad faith.
But in a dramatic volte-face, yesterday, the party national leadership
said it was in total support of the suit filed by its candidate, in
the November 16, 2013 Anambra governorship election, Tony Nwoye
challenging the result of the poll.
It described the action of the candidate as a step in the right
direction and an acceptance of the directive of the NWC earlier
communicated to him to pursue the mandate in accordance with
established democratic procedures and rules.
"The PDP is totally committed to democracy and electoral processes as
stipulated by the constitution and laws of our land.
This explains why we remained steadfast to the processes outlined for
the Anambra governorship election and the reason for our earlier stand
and directive to our candidate and members to participate in the
supplementary election as directed by INEC.
"As a party committed to strengthening the institution of democracy,
we believe that due process must be followed at all times to allow the
laws and electoral rules run their full courses without any
interruption. It is in this regard that we commend our candidate for
conforming with the ideals of our party in seeking redress at the
right time and through the appropriate democratic channel," the
statement said. Expressing optimism that justice would prevail at the
end of the day, the statement said the PDP was impressed by Nwoye's
credible outing, resilience and grassroots appeal which brought him to
the forefront in the race despite having only two weeks to campaign.
It therefore admonished all PDP members to close ranks and remained
focused in supporting the party and its candidate.

SCHUMACHER, FORMER F1 CHAMP, BATTLES FOR HIS LIFE

FRANKLIN ONWUBIKO - Michael Schumacher, the seven-time Formula 1
champion, is "fighting for his life" after a ski accident in the
French Alps, his doctors say. The driver remains in a critical
condition in hospital in Grenoble with head injuries suffered on
Sunday morning at the resort of Meribel. "We cannot tell you what the
outcome will be yet," the team treating him told a news conference
yesterday morning. His family are at his bedside. Schumacher underwent
surgery on arrival at the University Hospital in Grenoble.
He remains in a coma and the medical team treating him said that they
are working "hour by hour". "All we can do is wait," they added.
Prof Jean-Francois Payen told reporters that if Schumacher had not
been wearing a protective helmet "he wouldn't be here now". "We had to
operate urgently to release some pressure in his head," the
anaesthetist said.
Neurosurgeon Stephan Chabardes said that a post-operative scan had
shown "diffuse haemorrhagic legions" on both sides of Schumacher's
brain. The doctors refused to comment on his prognosis. The
44-year-old German was skiing off-piste with his teenage son when he
fell and hit his head on a rock. The accident happened lower down the
slope of the 'Dent de Burgin' peak .
Following the accident, Schumacher was evacuated to the hospital in
the nearby town of Moutiers. Prof Chabardes said the driver was in an
"agitated condition" on arrival in Moutiers and his neurological
condition "deteriorated rapidly".

ARMY URGES CHURCHES IN ADAMAWA TO REGULATE END-OF-YEAR SERVICE

The 23 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Yola, Adamawa State has advised
the Christian community in Adamawa to round off their end of year
church services today by 10p.m.
The advice was contained in a statement signed by the Brigade's Public
Relations Officer, Capt. Ja'aafaru Nuhu. He said the early completion
of church services by the time was because of the existing 11p.m. to
5a.m. curfew still in force in the state.
"The Headquarters of 23 Brigade wishes to bring to the notice of the
general populace of Adamawa State that the imposition of curfew from
11p.m. to 5a.m. daily is still in force.
"While we all know the importance of night prayers, especially at the
last day of the year, we need to consider the best interest of the
general public," the statement said.
It pledged the commitment of security agencies in the state to the
safety of life and property and urged the public to sustain its
support and cooperation towards the goal. Curfew has been on force in
the state since the declaration of state of emergency in May.

FIFA PICKS MBA'S AFCON WINNER AS 2013 BEST GOAL

FIFA has picked Sunday Mba's winning goal in the final of AFCON 2013
as one of the 13 moments that defined 2013.
The world football governing body on their website rated the goal as
one of the unforgettable and memorable moments of 2013.
It was a goal worthy of winning any match, and Sunday Mba's CAF Africa
Cup of Nations-winning strike brought joy and relief to an entire
nation.
Nigeria had not won a major trophy in 17 years going into the
continental showpiece, but despite the best efforts of debutant
finalists Burkina Faso, Mba's precise volley – after flicking the ball
over his opponent's head – proved sufficient to secure the African
crown.

NANS DEMAND ARREST OF KILLER POLICEMAN, SACK OF COMMISSIONER, DPO

The Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has
demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the policeman who
yesterday in Katsina shot and killed Umar Aliyu of the Hassan Usman
Polytechnic.
In a statement signed by spokesman Okoye Robinson Chibuzo, NANS
condemned the act in strong terms and called on the National Human
Rights Commission to investigate the incident and the killings of
other students which now number 30, as a matter of urgency.
"We can't understand what led to the killing of a harmless student by
the same persons whose responsibility is to secure his life and
property," the statement said. "This act of barbarism is a total
breach of the fundamental right to life of Umar Aliyu as enshrined in
the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and can't be taken
as this is a threat to the lives and security of the Nigerian
students." The students also called on the Inspector General of police
to sack the Commissioner of the Katsina State Police Command and the
DPO in charge [of the unit], or face "total war" which will be
declared against the police for the brutal killing of Nigerian
students.
NANS commiserated with the family of Umar Aliyu and the entire
students of Kastina for the great loss of one of their future leaders
whose life was shortened by a "blood sucking" policeman.
