JONATHAN HANDS OVER CERTIFICATES TO PHCN SUCCESSOR COMPANIES

President Goodluck Jonathas has handed over the share certificates and
licenses to 14 new core owners of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria
(PHCN) successor companies with an assurance that things can only get
better in the power sector.
Jonathan described the process of the privatisation programme as the
most transparent in the history of privatisation in the country and
that government is working out modalities to tackle the challenges
such as the payment of severance allowances to the PHCN staff.
He observed that the payment of emoluments to the PHCN staff have
almost been completed but called on labour to shun demonstration as
the decision taken is for the greater good of all Nigerians.

ELECTRICITY WORKERS PROTEST HANDING OVER OF PHCN TO NEW INVESTORS

Some disengaged workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN)
in Lagos and Edo on Monday staged protests over non-payment of their
terminal benefits before handing over to the new investors.
The President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday handed over the certificates
and licence to buyers of successor companies of PHCN.
The gesture signaled the government's disengagement from the
management of the plants.
The Federal Government would, however, continue to oversee the
transmission network in the interim.
All the PHCN offices in Lagos were under lock and key, while the
workers, serving or retired, carried placards with...

DANGOTE ADVOCATES TECHNICAL EDUCATION FOR INDUSTRIAL GROWTH

President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has called on developing
nations to lay emphasis on technical and vocational education as a
tool for accelerated industrial development and growth.
Speaking at the Global Education First Initiative Anniversary &
Learning for All Round Table held in New York in the United States,
Dangote said that developing nations needed a paradigm shift in their
educational system in order to spur technological development.
According to a statement on Sunday, the industrialist said at the
roundtable that the time had come for developing economies, especially
those of African extraction, to focus on vocational/technical
education in order to provide requisite skills that would drive the
quest for industrial development in their respective countries.
He stressed that the same strategy was used by the Koreans and Asian
Tigers to effectively transform from backwards to frontline economies,
adding that since it had worked in several countries, all African
countries needed was the strong drive to make it work.
Dangote, who fingered women as a powerful aspect of the population,
called for increase in the involvement of the girl-child in education,
saying the right education could have a dramatic impact on women
productivity. He also called for the training of the youths in order
to have the skills that will equip them for leadership.
He said the Dangote Group sponsored young people from Africa to the
World Economic Forum meetings to expose them to learn the art of
leadership from leading global businessmen and statesmen.
According to him, these young attendees on returning are equipped with
the necessary skills to provide the right mix of leadership needed to
help solve perceived loopholes and challenges in the domestic economy.
Over 70 young African professionals had benefitted from this project,
the statement said.

SEE RONALDO'S GIRLFRIEND IN NEW BIKINI PHOTOS

Cristiano may have impressed with his two strikes for Real Madrid
against the Championship side, but it was Irina who really turned
heads in the Floridian sunshine.

The Russian beauty donned a skimpy orange bikini that drew attention
to her admirable physique.

The model recently revealed how she keeps in such fine shape.

She said: "I really do love to work out. My favourites are pilates and
running along West Side Highway when I'm in New York.
"It's hard though when I travel because I get lazy and I love to eat
so I just try to find a good balance."

ABOVE 50 STUDENTS KILLED IN YOBE STATE

SOURCE: CHANNELS TV.
Scores of students have been killed in yet another attack by terrorist
group, Boko Haram, in Yobe state. The insurgents attacked the College
of Agriculture Gujba, 50 KM south of Damaturu, the state capital
yesterday night and killed several
students. A staff of the school who confirmed the attack to Channels
Television said several dead bodies are still being recovered from
bushes, hostels and classes in and around the school as scores were
killed in the attack. The source also revealed that surviving students
are at the moment making efforts to re unite with their families in
fear of further attacks by the insurgents. A witness quoted by Reuters
news agency
counted 40 bodies at the hospital, mostly those of young men believed
to be students.
College provost Molima Idi Mato, speaking to Associated Press, also
said the number of dead could be as high as 50, adding that security
forces were still recovering the bodies and that about 1,000 students
had fled the campus.
A Nigerian military source told AP that soldiers had collected 42
bodies. The gunmen also set fire to classrooms, a military spokesman
in Yobe state, Lazarus Eli, told Agence France-Presse.

POLICEMAN CAUGHT ON VIDEO DEMANDING N10,000 BRIBE

For the third time in the past two months, another policeman has been
caught on video demanding a bribe of N10,000 from a motorist.
The footage, secretly filmed by a passenger at the back seat of a
vehicle in Onitsha, Anambra State, has so far received thousands of
hits on YouTube.
In the video, a policeman apprehended the driver of a vehicle that
was coming from Akure, Ondo State to Umuahia, Abia State. The
policeman sat in the front seat with the driver, and after checking
the vehicle particulars, declared that he had discovered some
discrepancies between the documents and the chassis number.
In the video, the policeman explained that the number '0' was the last
number on the chassis number inscribed on the vehicle, while number
'3'was the last number on the documents presented to him for perusal.
The driver was seen arguing with the policeman that he had asked him
to veer off the road in order to enable him (policeman) do proper
checking of the vehicle. Once the alleged discrepancies were
discovered, the policeman insisted that he would collect N10,000
before he would release him.
The driver's appeal that there was an unintended mix-up somewhere and
that the vehicle was not a stolen one fell on deaf ears. A nursing
mother who sat at the back also appealed to the policeman.
The man in uniform bellows, "Settle us. Just give us N10,000 make I
waka comot. Or is it too much? If I knew you stole the vehicle, I
won't collect money from you."
But the driver, on noticing the adamance of the policeman, said he
won't give in to his demands.
"It is three much! I want you to take me to your station. I'm not
afraid of anything. I can go back to Akure. At worst, I will miss my
appointment in Umuahia. Why will I part with N10,000 on the vehicle I
didn't steal? No sir! I can't do that.
"I will rather go back to Akure, get the registration officer and
other supporting documents, come back with another vehicle and clear
myself. And that is to tell you that I have not done something wrong,"
the driver said.
The unidentified driver also calmed the nerves of the apprehensive
nursing mother who clutched a baby girl to herself. "My sister, don't
worry! At worst, you will sleep in a hotel with your baby when I go
back to Akure," the driver added.
The policeman replied, "Eh eh. It is three much. Wetin make am too
much?" After ruminating over the issue for some seconds, the
policeman, who was armed with a gun, ordered, "Driver, come down." And
the video went dead.
Meanwhile, outrage has trailed the incident on various social media
platforms. Those who have watched the video online describe the
encounter as a pointer to the depth of rot and decay in the Nigeria
Police Force.
They urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to
conduct an orderly room trial to ascertain the policeman's culpability
in the alleged crime and place appropriate sanctions on him if found
guilty.

BABY WITH EXTRA HEAD SURVIVES SURGERY

Three Month old Asree Gul, with an extra head as she lies at a
hospital in the eastern Afghanistan city of Jalalabad
This shocking picture shows a three-month-old baby with an extra head
as she lies at a hospital in the Afghanistan city of Jalalabad.
The photo was taken just before Asree Gul underwent a rare operation
to have the second skull removed.
Doctors say the surgery was a success, but it was complicated as vital
nerves and blood vessels were linked to the second skull.
The family – farmers in Chaparhar district – approached doctors after
Asree Gul's second skull made it difficult for her to sleep, and led
to her being stigmatised in their village.
Asree Gul – which means "new flower" – is one of a set of twins, and
doctors believe her unusual condition was caused when a third baby
failed to develop in the womb.
"Her mother gave birth to twins, two girls, one girl was in good
health but the other has an abnormality. She had an extra head
attached to her head," Dr Ahmad Obaid Mojadidi told AFP.
He added that it was the first successful surgery of its kind in
eastern Afghanistan.
"We don't have very developed equipment," he said, "but we are very
happy to have conducted the operation successfully".
The generous doctor completed the operation – which would usually cost
between £2,500 and £3,700 – for free, as the family could not afford
it.

HACKERS STEAL MICHELLE OBAMA'S ID DATA

An investigation has revealed that hackers stole millions of social
security numbers by cracking open the networks of large US data
brokers.
The ID details of US First Lady Michelle Obama and many other famous
people were exposed by the hack attack.
Journalist Brian Krebs tracked the information back to hackers who ran
an online market for confidential data.
He found they got their data by compromising computers sitting on the
data brokers' corporate networks.
In March, Krebs, as well as the FBI and US Secret Service, started
looking into how the exposed.su website was getting hold of social
security numbers and other details of many famous Americans.
The mysterious website, which has now been closed down, published
confidential information about Bill Gates, Beyonce Knowles, Jay-Z,
Ashton Kutcher and many others.

BABY BORN WITH EXTRA HEAD

A baby born with an extra head is recovering this week in Afghanistan
after undergoing a risky procedure to have the head removed.
Only a few months old, Asree Gul was discharged from a hospital in
eastern Afghanistan after doctors successfully removed the extra head
from her scalp, reports the BBC.
Born to farmers in the Chaparhar district, Asree also has a twin
sister, who was delivered without complications. Asree's unique
condition, however, made it difficult for her to sleep.
The hospital's chief surgeon, Ahmad Obaid Mojadidi, told the Agence
France-Pressethat the complicated operation performed on Chaparhar was
the first of its kind in the region.
Asree, whose name means "new flower," was not in good condition after
the procedure, according to the AFP. Her father, Nematullah, said he
had not expected his infant daughter to survive the surgery.
"The doctors saved her life. I thank them," Nematullah told AFP.
Doctors believe Asree's birth defect is caused when a baby, in this
case Asree's potential triplet, does not develop correctly in utero,
according to the BBC.
While not officially confirmed, this case appears similar to a rare
condition called craniopagus parasiticus, in which an underdeveloped
twin is attached to its fully-formed counterpart. One of the most
famous examples of craniopagus parasiticus was Egyptian Manar Maged,
who had the head of her twin removed in 2005 when she was 10 months
old, reported The Telegraph. While that operation was initially
successful, the girl developed a severe brain infectionand died about
a year after the surgery.

DEPORTATION SAGA: FASHOLA OFFERS UNRESERVED APOLOGIES TO IGBO'S

Two months after the Lagos State Government purportedly deported some
destitute from the state to Onitsha, Anambra State, Governor Babatunde
Fashola (SAN) today tendered an unreserved apology for the
misunderstanding that greeted the action.
The state government was accused of dumping 70 beggars at Onitsha
Bridge in the wee hours of July 24, a situation that generated public
outcry and bad blood between members of the Yoruba and Igbo ethnic
groups.
Gov. Fashola, who spoke at the silver jubilee of the Igbo
socio-cultural think tank, Aka Ikenga held at the Nigerian Institute
of International Affairs, NIIA, Victoria Island, debunked speculations
that he held Igbos in contempt.
He noted that the largest herds of cattle he received when his father
died was from the Igbos.
Fashola said: "I came here to say to thank you for the honour done to
my family and the memory of my late father.
"People, who clearly do not understand the actions taken and words
spoken are those I owe an explanation. I cannot take the Igbos for
granted because we have built a relationship based on tolerance,
mutual respect, love and trust. That relationship was built by our
ancestors and I put a lot of value in that relationship.
"I offer an unreserved apology if the actions taken had been misunderstood.
"But I think the basic issue Aka Ikenga must address is why people
feel compelled to immigrate from one part of the country to the other?
Is it the case that some lack the resources to develop or perhaps some
parts are endowed with enormous resources but not adequately managed?
"How can development be so difficult from the zone that has produced
people like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alex Ekwueme, Ike Nwachukwu, among others?
"As political storm gathers, there are contact spots but like in
football, contact spots have rules. Those who are victims of our
shortcomings as professionals in and out of government should not be
pounced.
"A day like these calls for deep reflection about issues of our
loyalties. Are we more Igbo than Nigeria or we are more Nigeria than
Igbo?"
The governor called on residents in the state to embrace the Residence
Registration Scheme (RRS) to enable the government meets its
obligation to them.

REPORT YOURSELF OR GET ARRESTED - FRAUD UNIT BOSS WARNS EZENWAJIAKU

The dust seems not to have settled over the allegation of fraud
levelled against former Anambra State Commissioner for Special Duties,
Vincent Ezenwajiaku.
At a briefing today in Lagos, the Commissioner of Police Special Fraud
Unit, Mr Tunde Ogunsakin, insisted that the accused person was
involved in a N10m fraud and should report to the unit or risk being
arrested.
It will be recalled that the former Anambra state Commissioner for
Special Duties, Mr. Vincent Ezenwajiaku, debunked the alleged story of
financial fraud brought against him by Mr. Mgbemena who he referred to
as his brother.
According to the former Commissioner, Mr. Mgbemena, who was a director
in NIMASA in 1998, on his own volition came to him and requested to be
a shareholder in his company, Bioplastics Industries Limited located
at Chief Vincent Ezenwajiaku Street, Ajao Estate, Isolo Lagos.
He said Mgbemena was a minority shareholder holding about 34 per cent
share while he controls over 70 per cent having set up the firm with
over 34 million naira in 1998, that Mr. Mgbemena, in paying up for his
share, did that in a trickle for three years, paying only N8.1
million.
In the year 2000, Mr.Mgbemena willingly opted out of the business and
suggested that the company be audited.
The auditors, Tony Nonyerem Enyinaya and company were consulted after
which it was resolved that he should pay Mr. Mgbemena the sum of N7.5
million, and the company folded up in 2001.
Due to a strange illness diagnosed as Stress Induced Nerve Disorder,
he was out of business and could not pay Mr. Mgbemena, but all the
while had been in constant communication with Mr. Mgbemena.
He said when he resuscitated his business again; his foreign debt
totalling N30 million had to be settled first.
At the verge of commencing the payment, Mr. Mgbemena who had already
sworn to dent his image, having being made a commissioner, sent the
men of Special Fraud Unit (SFU) from Lagos after him, who kept
attempting to arrest him leading to his obtaining a court order under
the enforcement of fundamental human rights on August 23rd restraining
them from arresting him.
Mr. Ezenwajiaku also promised to tender his resignation to the
Anamabra state governor, a thing he has since done but insisted that
he will pursue the case against Mr, Mgbemena, and would be claiming
250 million naira in damages, and that every kobo of the N7.5 million
will be paid to Mr. Mgbemena.

MOURINHO BLOCKED MY PROGRESS - VILLAS BOAS

Extra spice was added to Tottenham's clash with Chelsea on Saturday
after Andre Villas-Boas said he went into management when his coaching
ambitions were thwarted by Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan.
The two Portuguese managers will be in opposing dugouts for the first
time when their teams meet in the Premier League, four years after
Villas-Boas quit Mourinho's backroom staff at Inter to take a job back
home with Academica. The pair had been close, Villas-Boas working under
Mourinho at Porto and Chelsea before the spell together in Serie A
signalled the end of their working relationship.
The Tottenham manager had been an opposition scout for Mourinho but
wanted a more hands-on coaching role, only to be rebuffed.
"My relationship with him professionally and personally was excellent,
as you can imagine, because we worked so many years together," he told
reporters at Tottenham's training facilities in Enfield on Thursday.
"Our break-up point was because I was full of ambition to give him
something extra and I wanted further involvement to the job that I was
doing at the time which was scouting and match preparation.
"I felt that I could give him much more so my initial idea was to keep
working with him but he did not feel the need for someone near to him
or in another position as an assistant and because of that we both
decided it was time."
Villas-Boas denied there was any on-going feud between the coaches who
have strikingly similar career paths with varying degrees of success.
They are on speaking terms, but are no longer close friends.
"We talked at the Premier League managers meeting when we were there
in August, but since then no," Villas-Boas added.
The Tottenham boss may feel he has a point to prove at White Hart Lane
against the team who sacked him after only eight months in the job.
